RIP kitty

I believe my cat went on his last hike a week ago
Outdoor cats are known to deliberately walk away from home when they die, and I believe mine did just that.
In the last weeks he has been quite ill, mostly respiratory problems and what seemed like exhaustion. I took him to the vet several times and he got antibiotics and other pills, to no avail. His next appointment would be for an x-ray under anaesthesia, but it was not to be.
My cat (originally my mother's cat, which I took care of after she died) most of the times was out of doors, taking care of his territory, fighting and fucking, the things cats do when they have it good. He was shy indoors but outdoors I could be as far as half a mile from home when he'd run towards me from under a bush or car to greet me. Wonderful kitty
In his last weeks he stayed mostly indoors, going out only for brief moments to relieve himself in my garden.
Then a week ago his condition in the evening seemed to worsen. You could see breathing became a bit harder.
He meowed and led me to the door so I could let him out, but this time there seemed no joy to him. Out the door he looked at me with an eerie sad look and then walked out of my garden, head and tail low.
When he got sick I decided that if he should go for the last walk, that I would not stop him. Instead, he should die as he lived - a free cat - indoors or wherever he chose to. And he seems to have chosen to go into the world to die, like many outdoor cats seem to prefer.
I decided not to sleep that night to be there should he return, but when he gave me that look and walked off I immediately felt that this was it. In the two days thereafter I did a couple of searches in the neighborhood in the typical cat places. No such luck.
He probably got overcome by breathing difficulties and either suffocated or froze to death while exhausted
It's been a week now - it is safe to say he is gone.
2000-2007 RIP kitty

"happy" is a big word, but to me it seems very clear he made his choice, which is a choice many outdoor cats make.
Here he is during a Mushrooms session with friends, fully anticipating the photoflash of my friend's camera in the otherwise dark room at 3 AM, but not fleeing it either. My friend made flash photos in pitch darkness all night, so my cat knew he was bound to get his turn.
He loved psychedelic sessions, at least when the vibes were good, and those were the few nights he chose to stay mostly indoors.
He was a wild one. There could be a thunderstorm with gushing rain and hard wind, but it didn't deter him to go out and do cat things, nor did freezing cold or seering heat.
He might still be back but given the circumstances - probably not.

I'm now on the lookout for a kitty after several years of wanting to share my life with one, and the one thing that frightens me the most is to be where you've been last week.

You shouldn't be. My cat had many wonderful years and when he finally got sick death washed away his pains and sorrows, and wiped the slate clean for the next life.

If you can be a good pet owner then by all means save an abandoned cat or adopt a kitten and let it have a good life.
At the end, there is tragedy and horror for all of us, life is about the journey, not the destination.
My experiences with my heart attack and my mother's death have strengthened my belief that your time does not come a second sooner or later than it is due. If my cat had lived, the outcome might well have been worse. What if the x-ray had showed lung cancer? I think that whatever happens, is part of the Divine Plan.
But the Divine Plan includes my grieving too He was a great cat.

Sorry to read that WS, I know how hard it is to lose a pet All my cats that I currently have are under 1 year old. When they do pass it will be very hard for me I am sure.
Thats the weird thing about getting a dog or cat, you know that you will most likely outlive them, and everyday of joy with them only adds up to equal one giant crushing blow of pain when they die.
Whats even worse is not knowing, I had one cat that just didn't come home one night... probably lost a fight with raccoons, or something, but not knowing ate me up inside.
GOOD LUCK Time heals.

I like cats. I am sorry to hear that yours is gone, Seeker. It sounds like he shared many good memories with you. You should get another one. Pets offer great companionship in times of loneliness.

At least the cat had you until he knew he was ready to go. I can't imagine if my puppy outlived me by some cruel twist of fate, even though I'd be dead I'd still feel awful if he got shoved into a pound or adopted by people who didn't really care about him.

You keep calling him Kitty. Did he get named Kitty or are you just not using his name.
My cat always walks around with an attitude but I can tell he appreciates everything I do for him. Exotically in spring when I get piles of squirrels
I'm sure he figured it would be harder on you if you woke up and had to bury him or something similar. He also prob. didn't want to attract and predators/scavengers.

I'm sorry to here that...
I had to put my cat to sleep a few months ago, I loved that cat to death. What made it worse was she should have lived much longer, she was only barely 2 years old. She rarely ever went outside, but one day when she did she got into some antifreeze at the neighbors house, a couple of days later I noticed she was barely functioning and took her to the vet, they said there was nothing they could do but put her to sleep to keep her from suffering any longer. That was probably the saddest day of my life so far...
So I feel for ya. Its not easy, but its gotta happen someday...
