Sunlight is not an option
    #6509078 - 01/29/07 05:10 PM (17 years, 2 months ago)

I live in an apartment with 3 other roomates. Therefore putting my cakes in the sunlight just isn't an option. What are some other options? I have heard incandescent or fluorescent light will suffice (which one is better). Although when I think of using a light I picture a lamp sitting over my terrarium but, I have also heard that too much direct light is bad for the mushies. I need help and suggestions! Thanks.

If you did use the fluorescent light method, would you place the light directly over the plexi glass in the lid of my terrarium?

that would probley work. i've been told that 'as long as you can see your cakes/casings that they'll pin' and i've had no problems.

Yea flouro is what you need. But just so that you know, light is honestly not even necessary. Some people swear by it, but it is my opinion that the only thing light really does is make sure they grow straight - towards the light. Without the light they will grow in all directions. Some also say that light triggers pinning, but again Im not so sure as pinning is mainly triggerd by the change in temp/humidity.

Hell yeah, I'd lock my shit up too!

Most department stores (wal*mart) have under-cabinet light bars for less than or around ten bucks.

Those are all wonderful ideas however, if you want to kick it up a notch go with the black florescent light. I personally have one myself and it doesnt seem to be as much of an eye sore. Besides it's about 9 bucks at walmart for a 24inch black light on top of this black lights look really cool.
