Quoting agar, coir is a "distant 3rd" to homemade compost and then h/poo. Here's the link http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6468375#6468375.

I've had some experience with coir and I always get wonderful first flushes, but then the stuff comes apart when I'm picking my first flush. I've been told that adding some crushed oyster shell will help out with the texture and keep this from happening.

I hope that helps. Good luck.

Spent coffee is a substrate too.  So just throw some in there.  It's a good idea, and it's going to be hard to overdo it.

Just make sure they're SPENT coffee grounds.  As in, the ones left after you make a pot of coffee .

So, to make a decent substrate, i could just throw in some coco coir, some verm (slightly more than coir), some coffee, make sure it is moist but not soaking, and viola, i have a casing mix??

should i sterilize that in anyway?

Where do I buy cococoir, and how does it compare to Horse poo when using it as a bulk substrate?

You can buy it in the reptile section of nearly any pet store
look for Eco-earth,bed a beast or forest bed they all come in bricks.most pet stores sell it for around 5 bucks a brick but sometimes they sell three bricks wrapped together for like 8 bucks so if you see those just buy them all and stock up

As far as how it compares to poo,I find that poo gives bigger flushes and more of them but I still prefer coir over poo any day because it is SOOOO much easier to use,I usually dunk after the first flush and throw it away after the second,if you time everything right you should have something else ready to take its place in the greenhouse anyway so no need to sit and wait around for the 3rd flush,I would rather have new casings getting ready to produce 1st flush fruits

Garden sections of Walmart/Target/Lowes/Ace/Home Depot etc. It's in a box or small 5# bag.

I , myself , stop listening to advice from peeps in this hobby when they start looking for ease over results . Next you'll be looking on how to replace patience .

PF TEK is a lot easier then grains . No soak , no simmer , no PC . Why aren't you recommending them over grains?

IMO , coir is a distant , distant third as choice for sub . Christ , peeps are still using it for casing . What's that tell ya . Make up your mind all you coir enthusiasts ,is it a sub or a casing layer ? lol .

Funny how straw got such a bad name for being a one flush wonder , but everyone seems to want to jump on the coir bandwagon .::confused:

Let me know how the ride is , I wouldn't waste spawn on coir . Then again , I wouldn't fuck someone that's third rate . I'd wait for something worth fucking:;)I only like to do things that are worth doing .

You might want to check with RR about the bloodmeal . I believe he recanted and said it doesn't do a thing adding it to a sub . it needs to be added at the composting stage . Don't quote me , but I believe I saw a post when he changes his mind about that .
