new baby rat.
    #6506805 - 01/28/07 11:32 PM (17 years, 29 days ago)

so. his name is gonzo. and he's i guess.. five weeks old?
i got him thursday.. at the only pet shop around here that doesn't sell puppies like a fucking puppy mill.

i hope he calms down in a week. he won't stay still and runs all over me. i don't mind it except when he crawls down my arm onto my messy desk and sometimes he eats my hair while he's running around my shoulders.
but besides that, he's pretty amazing.

this is my first pet rodent.. anyone else have any pet rats or anything they want to share about?
i'm pretty god damn bored, and have no intention on sleeping anytime soon, which is why this post was created...

My roommate just got another cat. He's a cool longhair named Stewie. Climbs everywhere and pisses off the two 14 year old cats we're watching for a friend that went to study in Spain. The kitten would probably have a fun time with that rat.

don't touch my ratty.
:frown:

i was actually thinking about getting a kitty first. but i do live in a dorm room, and realized how bad of an idea that would have been since they do meow..
so this is as good as it gets.. my fish didn't enjoy being held so much, at least my ratty does.

sometimes they stay crazy forever. like i've had two orange shorthaired tabbies. and they were nuts their whole life... one is still alive. he is more nuts than the other. that's why i love orange tabbies so much.

but really, it can go either way. they can calm down over a period of time, or not.

and hey. i never was interested in rats until like a month ago when i figured out i couldn't get a kitty. they're not so bad.

yeah benedryl does work. my parents used to give them to my pets when we would travel, so they would sleep in the car. i don't know how much though.. i'm sure you could google something about it.

i had a dwarf hamster for 2 years, it died because i got it a new cage and when it tried to get out, the automatic door-close mechanism crushed him :frown:

i also had a rat whom i think was diseased because when it went to play with my neighbors rat, they both died in a week or so...

RATS!!!

I love those creatures. smart for a little animal. anyways, any tips..hmm. they are very social. so spend alot of time with him or buy him a friend. also give him a big place to stay in. they like to run around (as you've noticed )

rats can be great fun so i hope you have lots with him
