I had to leave my mushrooms unattended in an fc for 48 hours and when I came back they had fuzzy mycelial growth on their stems. Is this due to poor air exchange?

Yes, lack of FAE is usually the culprit, IMHO. Some strains have more of a tendency to do that as well.

Yes, but the growth on the stems of the mushrooms is not as dense as the stem itself. I dont want the casing to expend energy on this growth. I would rather it grow healthy looking mushrooms.

Mycelium growing up the stems is a sign of high humidity. It doesn't hurt anything, but if it's a concern, then up your FAE (ie. fan more often). If you're growing from cakes your RH is in the target range, so when you fan, mist the sides of the FC lightly. If you're growing from casings, they don't need such a high RH since the casing layer provides the micro-climate necessary for carpophore formation.

I think thats my problem then. I'll try and get the humidity down a bit.

like premed i think it's to do with FAE,due to the build-up of c02 in the fc's micro climate rather than humidity,as the"hairy boot phenomenon" seems to be of equal height across the fc from what I've seen using very small containers and minimal FAE. that fuzz looks to me anyway, a protective kind of growth. almost like htf is a contam going to cross that barrier and get a foothold in such a climate.

High RH, even with casings, should not cause this problem if FAE is sufficient.
