Pinheads, pinheads, roly-poly pinheads!

Thanks for the ice pak advice, folks! Only 3 days since I birthed the cakes and 2 days since I added the ice pak and already pinheads are forming on the cakes! What I do is this: I freeze the pak during the day and place it in the chamber in the evening. By morning it is thawed and I take it out for re freezing. I?m thinking this mimics the day/night temperature range.

Also I have hooked up an air pump on a timer to the chamber. I am using a Rubbermaid ?Fresh Top? container, which has inset into the cover a little lid for the air hose to go in and which allows a minimum of natural air exchange. The timer is set to run the pump for two hours in the early morning (4am - 6am) and again in the early evening at the same times. I like this because I get the air exchange without having to fan the chamber with the lid. I dunno, the whole fanning thing seems drastic to me. Doesn?t changing a large volume of air really quickly increase the likelihood of contamination and drop your humidity drastically? I am using the perlite method.

Here?s a lil pic of my set-up. The fresh air hose actually goes through the lid - the chamber is not exactly as pictured.

Thoughts?

Where is all the air that your pumping going to? is there a filter disk on that container?

Umm ... no, there's no filter disk. It's just a small aquarium pump with an air hose. The fresh air is pumped into the chamber and there is a small lid with tiny slats/holes (see my original post) to allow the air to exchange. I figured this would be safer than fanning in huge gusts of air with god-knows-what in it.

Is this wrong? I thought it would be just as safe as fanning is, if not more so. Please advise if I'm doing something incorrect or unsafe here!

Im doing basically the same setup, except I have a hole cut in the side of my terrariums with filter discs over them. I don't see the need to remove the lid and fan. With the positive pressure from the air pump on constantly the CO2 is pushed out of the filter hole. The only time I remove the lid is when I want to say hi to the lil' ones!

It looks like your cakes have some yellow mold on them...also your ice pack is getting green contamination all over it. I'd throw it all away...

Thanks. It's nice to know that SOME people here can tell a drawing from a photo!
Hahahaha ... I am kidding!

But seriously folks, can anyone tell me what these filter disks are and whether they are ABSOLUTELY necessary - I've spent a lot of cash this month and the rents due and my heart sinks at the thought that I've gotta go out and get MORE gear for the chamber! Not that I wouldn't! Cuz I've got 6 little pinheads already and my other cakes are almost ready to birth! No way I'll stop now! But do I REALLY need filter disks?
