Problem with Pressure cooker
    #6502563 - 01/27/07 03:44 PM (17 years, 2 months ago)

Hi. SInce I got rid of my contams problems, now when I pressure cook my jars , 1 or 2 always break.I was thinking that it was the heat that begin too fast so I fixed that, then I add like 4 rack and put the jars on them and they still break.I buy new jars and get rid of the old but it doesnt work either. It is a new mirro Pc so I dont think the gasket is really used, no pressure escape.Anyway I cant find the problem, can someone give me advice? If there is someone that have the mirro 22 qt, how do you use it usually?

Thanks

I put a dishrag at the bottom of mine to stop the jars from cracking, the few times I haven't I've gotten cracked jars. Simply place a preferably white dish rag (Colored rags will have their dye boiled off) under your jars and as long as you keep the water level where it should be you shouldn't have problems with the jars anymore.

You probably have a lot of lid bands leftover from all those cracked jars. Stack those up on the bottom of your PC to elevate your jars. That should do it.

If you have a rack under the jars, the next most likely cause is that you're popping the weight off to reduce pressure very fast after the cycle. That will break jars quite often. If you're not doing that, make sure you have mason jars, not cheap jelly jars. Look for Ball or Kerr brand.

Jars most often break, BECAUSE:

Without a TRIVET under them.

^ trivets ^

The bottom of the jar - heats up to FAST.

Or, if the lids are not 1/4 turn loose.
(when PC'ing)
And, you release pressure QUICKLY.
Content BOILS, creates PRESSURE inside the jars.
Which can cause STRESS fractures in glass.

I have only had one jar break since I started doing this and it didn't even break,it just had a crack in it,as long as you never forget to but the rack in the bottom you should be fine

ah ! thanks guy, it finally worked.I made 2 batch of jars today and no one break because I loosed the lid. Usually I was turning the lid to 3/4, almost tight.I never think of that because they were not tight at all but now it make a big difference, no jars break anymore.
