I am very new to this. And these are the first mushrooms I have ever picked. Just curious as to what these are. I'm sorry if my info isn't very useful. I tried describing to the best of my ability. Thank you.

Species #1

Habitat: Moist grass/soil. Found growing out of the ground only 2 feet from a busy road. It had rained heavily the days prior. fairly cold climate (January 24)

Gills: gills appear a light tan to medium brown color.

Stem: Light brown with light tan highlights. appears to be hollow.

Cap: Medium brown with some darker tones. smooth to the touch. about 2cm wide.

Spore print color: appears to be mostly grey

Bruising: (Can someone please tell me how bruising works?) I have not noticed any blue bruising however.

Location: Picked in the Lower Mainland, British Columbia, Canada.

Well I cant tell you what shroom that is as I know nothing about anything besides P. Cubensis....

Bruising occurs when the shroom is handled...

Yeah, psathyrella looks like a good guess, although the spore print looks like a bit on the light side. It doesn't look very dense though, so I doubt if it's a reliable indicator.

Psathyrella is my guess too. Koraks, I bet as you suspect that the print would be darker brown if it was denser and photo'd under some better light.

Nice description and pics L3V1, though I'm not sure about the spore print looking grey to you, looks brown to me.

Ohh, okay.

Thank you all.

I was reading through some more of the Mushroom hunting FAQ
and it says it's best to avoid Little brown mushrooms altogether.

Perhaps I should keep my eyes out for more peculiar looking ones.
Is it a good idea to handle one that I find, and see if it bruises blue for better luck before I take it? How long does it take to bruise once I've handled it?
thanks

Well, LBM's include some of the actives species as well. So if you are looking for actives, which it sounds like you are, you would not want to disregard LBM's all together.

Not all actives bruise blue, some times the bruising looks green- there are a lot of variables, that you will only learn to consider through practice. As always, don't eat anything until you have had it properly identified.

cubensis before bruising

same specimen bruised

disregard what im doing with the cotton ball, the pics are actually from a guide i wrote (the cloning one in my signature if you're curious) but they illustrate the point.  bruising will happen simply by picking them, pretty much anywhere you apply pressure with your fingers or anywhere the mushroom flesh is torn or damaged... sometimes instantly, sometimes the blue color develops over a few minutes.  and yeah, it can look greenish if the stem has a more yellow hue to it to begin with (yellow + blue makes green )
