Phone Alert When Someone Enters Apartment

I was wondering how easy it might be to wire my door up so that whenever it's opened I get a text or a call to my cell phone.
I'm out of the apartment a lot, and sometimes I swear that when I come back, things are moved. Then again, I do have a notoriously inconsistent memory.

It would be easier/cheaper to change the deadbolt.

Depending on how advanced you want to get, your idea can easily be accomplished.
There are many software packages that allow you to record a rooms activity with a webcam. Once something in the room trips the motion sensor, the webcam turns on and will email you, send you a txt message, etc. Try looking into some of these options - http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=webcam+motion+sensor&btnG=Search
In regards to what resin said, I agree
A deadbolt with a key that ONLY you have is probably easier.

PS. I don't mean to hijack this thread but resin... you signature is kind of mind blowing! Two ass cheeks, two "asses". A good looking, well kept ass, two (what look like) well kept donkey's) I think it awssome

Asses blow my mind too
Anyway, while as said you could get pretty high-tech with this and spend lots of cash, I'm sure.
here is a pretty cheap motion detecting system that will dial your cell when motion is detected AND let you listen in

There would only be you and your memories... the choices you've made, and the people you've touched. If this world were to end there would only be you and him and no-one else. " .............. "MAN! You know there aint no such thing as left over crack!"

The thing is, I live in an apartment complex and the landlord likes to (as far as I know) randomly send people in to "fix" things. I've been here a couple of times when he sent someone in, and asked what the hell they're doing here (in much more polite language) - they would tell me that my landlord said "such and such" needed to be "checked out/ repaired."

I was thinking that it might be possible to placed one wire on my door and one on my wall - both are connected when the door is closed, but when it's open the circuit breaks and I'm alerted to this change via cell phone. I'm really looking for a more... DIY sort of solution. I'm aware of the many retail products available online, but I don't wish to spend the cash on it. (I'm dirt po')
Darnit, I wish I had some electrical engineering experience.
ETA: Thanks for the link, Schwip. That thing's exactly what I'd like to make.

All the MORE reason to install your own new dead bolt. Where do you live? because certain laws prevent your landlord or his associates/contractors enter your apartment without proper notice in the US.

you do realize its most likely in your lease that they're required to give notice before entering your apartment right?
you should have that shit on lock.

Or get a mean dog!
I saw this alarm once that would make barking dog noises whenever a vibration, knock, or loud noise happened. That should keep those fools out.

In the contract, I had to agree that I wouldn't change the locks, nor lock up any of the doors in my apartment that didn't have locks on them.
I'm here in the "grand ol'" US of A, and I've heard mention of laws such as this, but I can't seem to confirm it with another source. If you or anybody else has a link or something, I would really, really appreciate it. I'd love to show that to my landlord.

I'm in Iowa, and I've been searching the Iowa Code, but it's a bit of a pain in the ass to actually find what one's looking for in it.

Uniform Residential Landlord and Tenant Act http://www.rentiowa.com/tenantcenter.cfm?CID=24#35]
Quote:
562A.35 Landlord and tenant remedies for abuse of access.
1. If the tenant refuses to allow lawful access, the landlord may obtain injunctive relief to compel access, or terminate the rental agreement. In either case, the landlord may recover actual damages and reasonable attorney's fee.
2. If the landlord makes an unlawful entry or a lawful entry in an unreasonable manner or makes repeated demands for entry otherwise lawful but which have the effect of unreasonably harassing the tenant, the tenant may obtain injunctive relief to prevent the recurrence of the conduct, or terminate the rental agreement. In either case, the tenant may recover actual damages not less than an amount equal to one month's rent and reasonable attorney's fees.
