Hi, I was just wondering if anybody knows how secure/safe it is to download illegally pirated music/movies/apps at a city public library though their wi-fi to your laptop. Because like most libraries, you have to scroll through their terms & conditions and choose accept for 1 hour of internet every hour. I've read them and there is a part about they have the right to report illegal activity...

Most libraries will (I imagine) have firewalls, QoS, port blocking/throttling or protocol blocking set up to stop people using p2p on their pipe.
How is the hotspot set up? Do you have to log in to use it, or is it open? If it's open it should be ok.
If your library doesn't block p2p or require you to log in, it should be pretty safe - it's probably a good idea to spoof the MAC address of your laptop's NIC before using p2p, but other than that, there's no real way to tell who was doing what. Unless, of course, you log in to an e-mail account or do something else that reveals your name or other identifying characteristics using the same MAC address as you're using to DL stuff.

but, ive never been able to download ANYTHING on a library computer, they usually have everything pretty well blocked.

Just drive around a nice neighborhood with a laptop... You are bound to find some retard with an unencrypted broadband wireless connection.
It's really sad.

Not really. It's free internet the way it's supposed to be. The only reason the internet should ever cost any money is to pay for the wires to get you connected. No wires, no cost.
Besides it's pretty smart to have a reasonable out for any illegal activity that might be traced to your IP. If cops ever show up you just tell them that you have a wifi access point and it could have been anyone on the block or just driving by.

Why should you have to pay for internet service? Nobody owns the internet.
The way the internet works best is when people are all tied together in a distributed network rather than having everybody be on the "last mile." It makes the internet more robust and resilient.
Companies monopolizing the last mile have changed that dynamic so that "users" are seperated from "the internet" when really they should be part of it. Wireless promises to change all that back. If there are no wires and no cost of laying and maintaining the wires then there is really no justification to charge for that connection. People are buying the equipment for themselves anyway and the cost of the power to run it is insignificant.
The internet might well become completely free for almost everyone in the next 10 years or so. It's free for me! I haven't paid an ISP in over 6 years.
The reason that a lot of people pay now is the attitude that "I have to pay so you should too" rather than the attitude of "I'm already paying I might as well share my unused bandwidth." I think as software becomes more advanced it will become more of a P2P situation. Even if I had an internet connection I'd love to be able to sap up my neighbor's extra bandwidth when I needed it and give back to them when I wasn't using it. I'd also love to share my extra bandwidth with strangers or relay my wireless to cover more area. As the software to make this easy becomes available I'm sure this will happen more.
