 Monotub, test sniff- slightly funky smell

Let's say its been a while. What would one smell while opening up their monitub during the incubation period for a test sniff after 2 days of spawning?
There was a slightly funky smell buit not strong enough to really determine much. I feel a contam (bacteria) might be coming on.

Bacteria should be present to an extent in a bulk substrate. Surely it won't smell fresh as daisies. 
The sniff test works well on sterile spawn (i.e., your jars or such) but isn't as accurate an indicator in a bulk colonization run. I'd not worry about it until/unless you observe stalled growth.

it was noticed that the bulk sub was pretty dry after letting it cool. It was sprinkled with straw water a bit while mixing in the spawn but i have a feeling that wasn't enough. what would be the best way to rehydrate this shit? misting?

there is no incubation period for bulk substates, incubating just asks for problems.
also, ive done quite some tubs (who'd guess) and ive never had any strange smells,
sounds as if you fucked it up somewhere along the process.

yeah im in fuckin in denial.. i smell bacteria, but the ratio was like 1:2 and it was past for 2 hours with no bacteria visible in the spanw itself. what a crock of shit

I'd still definitely not rule it out unless you see growth suffer. Maybe ohmatic has never had a tub smell, but i know I have on more than one occasion had faint bacterial odors, and it still turned out (and coincidentally once it IS colonized, the smell goes away, replaced by the familiar welcome mushroom smell.) Its not a death sentence yet, unless the smell gets unbearably horrid and growth slows or stalls.
As for hydrating it, not much you can or really want to do at this stage... if anything, dryer means less hospitable to bacteria and faster colonization.
Live with the results of the first flush, then dunk and re-peat.

Bacteria is not a contaminant of bulk substrates. In fact, you want a bit of bacteria. You shouldn't be opening a colonizing substrate to smell anyway. Keep it closed up(except for gas exchange) to maintain high CO2 levels and wait for it to fully colonize at room temperature.

thats why i started laying a punctured layer of tinfoil over it in order to
provide VERY LITTLE gas exchange and keep it from drying out.

A slight funk smell happens.
No big deal, unless it gets more than SLIGHT.
If you get nice healthy aggressive myc crawling all over everything.
You got a winner. Thus far, anyway.
