Mycelium on Petri dish pictures * 1

I think Fabio asked for these a few months ago, but it's been awhile since I've had my cultures out. I decided to resurrect some of my test tube cultures that have been in the refrigerator for a few years, so here's pictures of the ones that have taken off so far. You'll see what appears to be a contaminant on the Hypholoma sublaterium in the top section at ten o'clock. That section won't be used. The morel looks funky because they're growing out from a piece of sclerotia that has been in storage for nearly ten years. The sclerotia was cut into three small pieces and placed on the dish. I'm sure after a transfer it will look much cleaner.

For those of you who can't read my sloppy writing on the dishes, they are in this order: Shiitake 75(aloha medicinals), P. nameko, Morchella esculenta(Morel), Lepiota procera, Hypholoma sublaterium, Ganoderma tsugae, Ganoderma oregonese, Ganoderma lucidum, FP's Shiitake, Agaricus portobello, Agaricus bitorquis, Agaricus augustus.

Wow! Finally we have detailed pics about the different mycelia as generical(or maybe no!) reference!

What about the code before the name of the mushrooms? is the session of work?

Ganoderma Oregonese Sheriff?!? The day when the sheriff stopped you? :laugh:

hey rr, i just started a bag of black morel...in your experience does it sorta look like cobweb starting out? the myco is really streechy as i pulled the plastic away from the bag a bit.

it just started growing so i can't tell if it is growing down into the bag yet, ill know soon enough i guess.

Morchella mycelium is a bit strandy and thin at first. It'll thicken up as time goes on. Be patient because it takes some time to do so.

Correct, morel mycelium looks like mold at first. That morel dish above has not had the mycelium transferred yet from the original sclerotia it's growing out from. Those petri dishes all had a week to ten days of growth when the pictures were taken.

The code before the name on the dishes is the date of transfer. 0113 indicates the dish was inoculated/transferred to on January 13. I don't add the year on petri dishes because it's obvious to me since I only keep them for a few weeks at most. Test tube slants will have two more digits added. A test tube slant made on the same day as those petri dishes would have a code of 011307 prior to the name of the species to indicate 2007.

Fabio, thanks for the PM about my spelling of the Lepiota procera. I accidentally transposed the lettering when labeling the dish. Next time I'm making transfers and have the camera out, I'll try to get another picture of the culture with the correct spelling.

Yes, the 'sheriff' strain of G oregonese was collected the day a stupid sheriff stopped me and gave me a ticket on a 4X4 trail deep in the mountains. It turns out that it's the best producing strain of G oregonese I have, so I guess the $101 ticket was worth it, but I'm still pissed. Just last week, I was on another mountain road when I passed the very same sheriff stuck in a snowbank, trying to dig his SUV out by hand. He flagged me down as I went by to pull him out with my jeep, but I just waved and left his ass stranded there. Karma man, karma.

Yeah, yours is really white compared to mine Roger. I think i've got the elata though. It was hard for me to identify the dry specimen. I need to take a look at the spores if I can acquire a fruitbody this century. lol. The mycelia in my plate was initially a light red color (orangeish) and then darkened with age. I know it's true Morchella mycelia because of the sclerotia formation.

Did your culture start out a moldish color and then turn white Roger?

I'm not sure about the color at first. I inoculated the dishes, then didn't look at them for a week until I got them down to spawn to grains and take the pictures.

Weird! My culture is nearly black now. There was only a minimal amount of white mycelia when I spawned the bulk substrate and then that too turned dark red, almost black.

The morel doesn't look too to funky. Kinda normal, maybe a little on the light side and a little on the fluffy side? I always remeber it looking more like a loose felt mat. I guess that happens more with time though.

Funny story about the sheriff! What was the ticket for?

We need to see a microscopic picture of the hyphae to identify it, verify it.
Rhizopus is parasitic on morels, and most likely is on the wild specimens from the woods.

Next time I make up some plates, I'll try to remember to drag the scope out and get some slides made up. I'm not growing from spores, but rather from culture slants. In fact, the picture at the start of this thread is mycelium growing out from a piece of cut up sclerotia. They seem to form in the culture slants, which is good because they last longer that way.

you ever make a Morel LC? Look at that under a scope. it will blow your mind what you see.

They revert back to a primordial kind of growth. And form into spheres.
