Is it a good idea to create jars way b4 inculation

I was just reading at www.fanaticus.com, about the control technique, where you go ahead, create the subtrate in the jars, and put them to the side for a few days b4 you innculate. im wondering if anyone does this/has experience in this, and if they can tell me if its a good idea or not. im also wondering how long they can sit, and if you should put them in your incubation chamber or not. also im wondering if you go about the process the exact same, and just stop at the innculation part? ok thanks you guys

Alright, let me set this straight for all of you. Letting substrate sit for extended amounts of time is completely retarded. Think about it, you have bacteria sitting in the substrate, just growing, mold and whatnot, so you let it germinate for a few days, now you have advanced contamination and spent substrate. How in the hell is this a good idea? "Let whatever contaminants grow, so they won't come back" (not an exact quote), wrong! It's much easier to eliminate a few endospores before they germinate, than to attempt to wipe out the contamination itself. If you sterilize your substrate, and are somewhat intelligent about the process, you won't have any contamination afterwards. Of course you will almost always have a contamination rate, but letting your jars brood with endospores and various bacteria is going to take this rate up ten fold. Don't let your substrate sit unsterilized. Would you like your meat (bi-)products to sit for a while before they are cooked "just to make sure everything that can grow will"? No, it's mundane, and very dangerous if you have something nasty germinating. However, if you are into wasting money and time, let the jars sit for a few days, hell, for that matter why even bother sterilizing and innoculating the damned things at all? Do not let your jars sit, this is a warm, open welcome to contamination.

Rain: you left out an important detail.

Are you sterilizing the jars and then letting them sit? Or do you mean to just mix the substrate and load the jars and put them aside for a few days?

If you sterilize the jars, they can sit for a month or more before innoculating--I've done it myself when I didn't have enough room the the pc. Although there's really no reason to do this.

If you're not sterilizing first, then NO. The jars will contaminate within a week.

im was going to sterlize them first, because i am still waiting on spores, which should be here soon. so im wondering if i could go ahead and fix up my jars, since im pushed for time on when i can do them. in the facus (spelling), it said that you could monitor to see if the jars where contamned, if you do it like this, i figure since i cant really do anything with out spores, i was going to do as much as i can b4 i get em. i was also told to let the jars "site" for 24 hours, and that might help colonization.

I'm always reading posts about ppl who make and sterilize jars before the spores come. This is somewhat stupid. What if something happens to the package? What if the vendor didn't send them when he was supposed to? What's the rush? The day the spores come, make and sterilize your jars...The next day you'll be inoculating. Ok, you lose one day...big thing...

Of course sterilized jars can be kept for some time. But there are always some contam spores that survive sterilization (really small amounts) - especially bacterial endospores. By injecting mass amounts of shroom spores you're ensuring that the small amount of contams will be killed by the good mycelium. If you let the jars sit for some time you're giving those contam spores a head start. Should they have time to germinate, mycelium will not fight them and you'll have contam problems.

If the purpose is to know if the jars are good or not, fill one or two and sterilize. If in one week or two they have no visible contamination and do not smell bad cook the others and inoculate them all.

i agree. i personally dont even give them overnight to cool. i know within 4 hours they are cool enough to knock up ( from the time the pressure is 0, and i take them out of the pc). the most i give them is 6 hours, and i got a great success rate. i want to give the spores as much time as possible to get a strong foothold.

I went and pressure cooked 18 jars but I only innoculated 13 cause I didn't want to waste all my spores on a first try fuck up. All my jars I Knocked up got fully colonized except for one wich I put a dash of horse shit and shredded potato peals in to see if they would colonize faster and or give better growth. {Don't ask! I smoke too much dope and I'm a curious fucker.}Don't do this at home unless you want to see some really funky colored mold!
Anyways to make a short story really long! My other 5 jars I didn't touch, they just sat in the basement totally forgotton for a couple weeks.When my other jars were about 80% colonized I decided to make up another batch for scientific purposes.Thats when I found my totally forgotton jars still in the pressure cooker. They showed no signs of contamination so I knocked two of them up and used the other three for research.{Plus did twelve fresh jars.}
The ones I knocked up are growing strong NO DIFFERNCE AT ALL from the fresh jars............!
The three I fucked with for reasearch have long been forgotton tossed away nasty looking freaky looking hunks of colored hairy growing icky freaky sickly blechy hunks of just all around not pretty stuff.
I'm far from qualified to answer your question but I can tell you this,I have innoculated three PF jars three weeks after cooking them and they did just fine colonizing..........I highly doubt a few days makes any differnce.

cool, ive decided that when my spores come in, im going to create a few jars, and let them sit over night, while my spores hydrate in my syringes over night. then im going to go ahead and innculate those right off, then make some more, let em cool for about 4-6 hours, and do the same. that way i can just test it all out!

that's probably the best plan.

but if you HAD to let sterilized jars sit--as long as they're air tight and you didn't fuck up on the sterilization part, they'll last for a good few weeks.
