South Africans in pockets around the country were hit by power cuts on Thursday, from motorists being unable to fill up their tanks to factory owners and workers sitting idly as the power button on their machines failed to respond.

SA Chamber of Business (Sacob) president Deidré Penfold appealed to Eskom to get to the bottom of the problem to avoid further financial losses.

"Such disruption clearly has adverse consequences for domestic business confidence. Just as damaging is the adverse image portrayed to foreign investors," said Penfold.

In the Western Cape, the clothing industry confirmed that "numerous factories" were affected by Eskom's load-shedding.

"I can confirm that the clothing industry has been affected. We received reports that quite a number of factories were affected," said Cape Clothing Association executive director Johann Baard.

He added that four major clothing industries had closed at the end of 2006 and this crisis was the last thing the ailing industry needed.

Kevin Maxwell, spokesperson for Metro traffic, said metro police officers were ready to be deployed to intersections across the metropolitan areas of the city to ensure that the situation on the roads remained calm.

On Thursday blackouts started as early as 8am and continued until about 3pm.

Salt River, Observatory, Mowbray, Rosebank and parts of Rondebosch were first to first the brunt.

As the hours passed, suburbs from Hout Bay to Blaauwberg, Goodwood and Kirstenhof had to deal with mandatory loadshedding periods for up to two hours on Thursday.

By midday tempers flared and hooters blared as traffic across the city backed up at out-of-order traffic lights.

Shoppers streamed out of shops and many stores and service centres were forced to close their doors for most of the morning.

A city radio station was inundated with calls from disgruntled residents who were struggling to follow the incorrect loadshedding charts published by Eskom on Thursday.

Hospitals were also affected. According to Miranda Anthony of the Department of Health's communications department, Groote Schuur, JF Jooste and Red Cross Children's hospitals were affected.

But Anthony said the disruption had been minimal as their generators had kicked in immediately.

A statement from the city said that while the national transmission grid remained stable, the country was faced with a shortage of available generating capacity.

"Eskom has activated all pre-arranged emergency options, but this will not be sufficient to address the shortfall of electricity for today and possibly for the coming week," it said.

The city has appealed to everyone to assist by switching off non-essential electrical equipment.

Mariette Du Toit of Cape Town Tourism said she did not think the power cuts would have a negative effect on tourism.

Tony Ehrenreich, Cosatu provincial general secretary, said the power shortage was worrying.

"There has to be an explanation. We need to get a clearer understanding to plan for the outages," he said.

Eskom and the City of Cape Town have published an integrated load shedding schedule informing electricity customers across the Western Cape of when they could possibly have load shedding.

While most business suffer during outages, there are some in the generator and gas business that stand to benefit.

Robbie Joseph of the sales department at a Maitland company that supplies generators said they had received many calls on Thursday and were anticipating an influx of customers on Friday.

We swear by Allah the Almighty that if the Republic of South Africa sends troops to Islamic Somalia whether under the guise of the African Union or otherwise, days and nights will not pass until we strike you in the heart of your own home, and on that day we will not differentiate between voters and voted for, and Allah bears witness to what we say.

Don't be fooled South Africa by those who say that it was not the Mujahideen who cut off your electricity, for by Allah it was only His soldiers who did it.

Possibly. If I was a guerilla fighter today I'd hit countries where it hurts. Energy sources. They are tight worldwide thanks to over 6 billion people clamoring for it.

Expect attacks on pipelines and oil infrastructure to increase along with energy prices as the world spirals out of control..
