making a heat mat
    #6475634 - 01/19/07 06:10 AM (17 years, 2 months ago)

hmmm i had an idea...how to make a cheap heat mat in which to incubate SWIMs jars etc..a small one so it can be a stealth growing experiment...
any ideas?
was thinking possibly using car battery copper wiring and some kind of temparature indicator..aint sure though as i was never cool at physics.more chemistry and biology..lol

Incubation isn't that important, and far too easy to screw up.
Just leave them at room temp.

Those are both good places as long as the heat don't get to much above 80.

heating elements are made with high resistance wire, like nicrhome wire. copper will not work. if you try to short a car battery with some copper wire, you might have a battery acid explosion cleanup on your hands... its one of those things, if you have to ask, you probably shouldn't even be considering it... burning your house down and/or injuring yourself isn't worth it

read up on a TiT incubator if you really want to incubate, it uses a much safer method and there's water involved to diffuse the heat so it is gentle and even - a heating element (or a heating pad) will more likely dry things out and over-heat areas of your jars while leaving other areas cool. you can build an efficient and effective tub-in-tub (TiT) incubator for under $40.

or, do as has already been suggested and stick at room temperature, or find a clever warm spot somewhere...

I have an idea that your house is going to burn down.

Seriously, that step just sorta happens... I used a simple 'heat bomb', but plenty of folks build simple TiT incubators.

No need to re-invent the wheel.
