some things to consider are resale value, etc.
you know, 4wd cars get worse mileage than their 2wd friends. AND that actually hurts your resale. People look down on 4wd more often than not.
have you ever heard of the Honda Fit? Check it out.

Well, them I'm a dick... sorry.
Just do me a favor when you get your car. Every time you pay $30+ to fill up, put a little check mark in column A. For each speeding ticket you get, put a check in column B.
Then, for each trophy you win racing down the interstate, put a check in column C.
After 3 years when you car is worth nothing because cars devalue faster than Enron stocks, add up all the check marks. Maybe your next car will focus on realistic factors.
Maybe throw that 20K + your WHOPPING $15k salary into a bank account, so when the army is done with you, you'll be able to afford a downpayment on a HOUSE... you know, those things that actually increase in value, and you can actually LIVE in.

Get an 80's diesel benz with 120K miles on it. You could easily own that car for 10 years. You can get a nice one for $6k (fully loaded with power windows, sun roof, abs, trac. control, climate control, plus the pimp ass plush leather seats), as opposed to the $25K you'll end up paying after taxes/fees/interest. And any girl driving a diesel benz is fine in my book. Convert it over to WVO and you'll never worry about fuel economy ever again.
Look at this one

getting a used car is teh BEST option. or perhaps like 2 years old, so it's fairly new, but MUCH cheaper. Since Banez, the mechanic who cant drive a stick, can work on the car there wont be any worries. If you know how to fix em, and have the capability, used cars are where it's at.

Hmm... that isn't all that much. Is housing provided by the army or will you have to pay for that too? Also, how long are you going to be paying $250 a month? On a $20,000 car, that sounds like a 6 or 7 year term... too long IMO. I'd only buy what you can pay off in 4 years or less. But that's just me.
Anyway, ignore the horsepower snobs... go with the more efficient choice.

I don't know if I would say that Toyota is producing flawless vehicles, days after they just announced a recall of half a million trucks due to a serious steering flaw that has caused accidents already. GM is not the only domestic auto maker.
I bought an 02' Mustang GT just over a year ago with 33,000 miles on it. I have since racked up an additional 15,000 miles, and the midrange bluebook value is still the same as what I paid for the car. Although I have no plans to sell the car as I love driving it, it is good peace of mind knowing that I could sell the car and my only loss would be the tax I paid on it.

But keep in mind with Subarus you don't get traction/stability control to go with their AWD unless you are spending a gazillion dollars. Also Personaly if i was going to spend that much money i would get IS300 2007 AWD...
also if u want to be cheap with the awd like the subaru's u can get toyota matrix in awd.. for cheap

Hahaha @ DRTMaverick...awesome RvB reference, there. XD
I've now realized that I'm probably in the middle, opinion-wise, out of most of these folks. I want a car that I can have a little fun in, that looks good, that gets great mileage, and is still quite practical.
The only car that I'm interested in right now is a low mileage, used 1990-1993 Acura Integra. I know, I know, some of you will probably beat me up about this. =)
One final thing: I couldn't agree more on this as having a manual transmission (as opposed to an automatic) increases BOTH mileage AND power. Seriously, there is NOTHING like driving a manual. Once you get used to it, you LOVE driving in one. Right now I'm driving a 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme International. The car is fine, but sometimes I just miss having a clutch. It makes me sad.
Basically, it's time for me to get another car, even though I'm only 21 and I'm still in college. Rediculous. =D

the toyota matrix is the gayest car i have seen in my life.. well right after the echo.
and yeah whiskey, my salary is 15k, but the military pays for my housing, groceries, utilities, and internet connection.. so the 15k is pretty much all disposable income... and i plan on paying off the car within the first year or two.

as somebody else said, i'd recommend buying a pre-owned certified subaru over a brand-new one. sure, it might not have that super dank new car smell, but even a year old car with, say, 15k on it will end up being significantly cheaper than a brand new one.
and get a stick; it's so much fun driving my impreza in the snow, downshifting and sliding turns and then as soon as i start to de-clutch she just grabs the road and i'm off!
