A funny story
    #642579 - 05/23/02 11:54 PM (21 years, 10 months ago)

Feel free to laugh at me:

Following a suggestion from Bluemeanie, I bought some tupperware containers because i was having trouble finding jars. They were 250 mL round containers being very much like canning jars, except plastic. They were microwave safe, so i figured they'd be ok in the pressure cooker.

But i didnt put enough water in there

The water boiled off and by the time i turned it off there was a plasticcy smell and some black shit coming out of the steam valve. It's not even my pressure cooker, im borrowing it off my mum's friend!!

I finally got the cooker open and found it wasn't all as bad as I'd feared. I'd put some cloth in there so the plastic jars weren't in direct contact with the metal. The cloth was burnt and the jars were very much deformed. Small holes had melted in the top and bottom of the jars. Water had got into the substrate and i had to throw them all out!!

I guess I'll stick with glass in the future!

PC's reach pretty high temps, I would never even dream about putting plastic in a PC. Look around online for 1/2 pint jars if they seem to be un available in your area. You live in Perth, right??? That is a decent sized city, right?? They must have a demand for 1/2 pint jars. I don't mean to sound like an ass but, you just gotta look around man!!!!

HAHAHAHA I know what you are going threw. The first time i tried to boil my jars i put paper towels in the bottom so my jars would get direct contact. The first half hour water was boiling nicly i was happy that everything was going right BUT i dont remember what happened after that. I fell asleep and all the water evaporated and cought my paper towels on fire. I woke after smelling the smoke and after climbing my way threw the smoke i found 3 big pots of burnt shit and i had to throw them all away. So shit happens.

I was presterilizing some peat moss and verm yesterday in the oven, and completely forgot about it. 3 hours at 350F. When i finally remember and came downstairs, the house reeked of burnt moss and the bowl looked like ashes.

If you can't find jars, go glasses.
Put if you insist on the tupper wares, get the glass kinda with the heavy duty rubber topping. NO PLASTIC!

Heat up a nail when you poke holes in these bitches, becuase this rubber is selfhealing, and you need air exchange (to equilize pressure in cooker/gas exchange during colonization.

I used to put somthing in the bottom of pc to prevent direct contact, but I dont anymore and never had a problem with broken or cracked jars.

I checked out all the large supermarkets, some speciality kitchen ware places, and even some hardware stores.

Does anyone from Perth know of a place??

Plastic is'nt good, one time I mistaked some high density plastic for being able to survive, it did survive the p.c. but the bottom was all twisted, and the tops melted from the metal latches heat, so they could only work one time, which they did.
