yet another casing question

had a quick question--thickness of substrate when casing-how thin is to thin and how thick is too thick--I have no experience and im trying not to fuck up... thanks

There's some debate on this matter - some teks say that it ought to be 1/4 of your substrate depth, so a 4" substrate should have a 1" casing. My friend has found, however, that a casing of 1/4-1/2 inch is almost universally adequate.

Duh. Just realized you were asking about substrate depth! I would say that the substrate material ought to be no thinner than 1", though I'm sure it can be done more thinly. Maximum? Well, yield is dependant on the total amount of substrate (among other factors), so as deep as you can reasonably make it!

If you're using multispore innoculations, you may not have the best results mixing different jars of substrate. My friend started out with quart jars of rye berries and water (1:1 ratio), and used those to fill 8"x5.5" baking tins, which left enough room for about 1/4"-1/2" casing on top (he uses cactus soil & vermiculite).

how well would a casing layer of just vermiculate work?? also - would the crumbling of brown rice flour cakes as opposed to shaken fully colonized rye substrate be okay??

it works fine, just watch the moisture level
