I live in Washington too and have found loads of Amanita Pantherinas here in April and May. Although they are gone now (ate em all ? LOL). I also found one Amanita Gemmata, but it only gave me a slight buzz. But yes, when I lived in NJ amanitas fruited in the summer, more in July than in August. I can only assume OH to have a similar season.

PS. large amounts of muscimol / isobenic acid from the amanitas leave you weak and tired, also spasms for a few days. Each person reacts differently of course, but be VERY careful with amanitas.

Amanitas are the most delicious of the magic mushrooms. What I do usually is sautee them and put them between two slices of bread. Heat up your pan nice and hot, drop a nice dab of butter. Dice up your mushrooms (just enough to fill the sandwhich. Fresh of course), drop the diced mushrooms onto the butter and stir. Toast bread and add pepper ot spices as you like. It is delicious just alone with the taste of butter.

Thanks for the tip! I don't feel like eating too much before eating amanitas. My stomach always has some bad reactions.. Maybe I will try it this summer when I will pick some fresh ones. Till them, the dried one are cool also. Shroom on!

Panthers have fruited already, try hunting around pine woods. Two days ago I hit up a new area and found more than I could imagine. A friend and I brought home over 3 lbs worth. LOL. Good luck in your search.

Don't take as much of the Pantherinas as you have with the muscaria. Panther caps are much more stronger. Same with the gem caps (amanita gemmata)

I would not recommend people who are not trained mycologists to collect the panther mushrooms. They cam resemble some variations of Amanita Phalloides, the destroying angel mushroom. Pepople have died in the pacific northwest from Amanita pantherina. Stick to muscaria if you have to try these mushrooms but avoid other species of Amanita.

Amanita Phalliodes (death caps) doesn't have the spots or warts, and is more yellowish, greenish color. And the odor is awful. Destroying Angels (Amanita Verna, Virosa, Ocreata, etc) are all snow white. Panthers on the other hand are dark chocolate brown and smell oh so delicious. And have lots of spots or warts all over them. The really do not look anything like any of the poisonous ones at all. The only mushroom that does look very close is Amanita Spissa aka Amanita Excelsa. And the both of them are delicious edibles.

Excellent post, drow. You know your stuff. Ever find Ceasars Amanita in your area? Also, how do you recommend preparation of Muscaria/Pantherina for trip? Do you bake, fry, dry, or what?

Sorry for the delay, have been going through alot of life problems.
Thanx for the compliment.
I like them best sauteed. But I have even eaten them inside tacos. Sounds funny I know, but you will be pleased with how delicious amanitas are.
I have never found one of those amanita Ceasars.
PS Amanita gemmata (gemmed amanita is sometimes found next to panthers, bright yellow caps with big blotchy spots/warts)
Good luck to you

drow, since u seem to know ur shit on the amanitas... i have a question. Ive read up on the trips these things give, and ive gotta alot of mixed ideas. Ive got 4.5 dried grams of some amanitas that came from Europe (supposedly more potent than the ones here). I was wonderin wut kinda effects i should expect. Ive heard everthign from "ull just be sick all night and wont trip" to "make sure u have a sitter b/c the trip will blow u away"

so wuts ur opinion?

thought i'd add, gemnatas become faded with age and are sometimes a dull tan/wellow to begin with.

Each person's chemistry is different of course. I have never gotten sick or even nauseous from amanitas. My friend nathan got sick and threw up, but he was also drinking alot of beer. From the trip he described, seeing the walling flowing, and pictures talking to him, he did alright. His brother Mike always just falls asleep with no tripping. I usually shoot for level 1 or 2 trips. But I have had level 5 by accident once. LOL. That is of course another story........

That is correct about the gem caps.
