Extreme GloveBox
    #6457332 - 01/14/07 01:47 AM (17 years, 1 month ago)

I realize theres alot of posts on gloveboxes, but i was so proud of this one that i had to post it. All materials can be purchased at most any hardware store.

Total Cost under $40. Assembly time was about half an hour.

4" PVC cleanout body
4" rubber coupling
4" Hose clamp
"Arm Length" Neoprene Coated Gloves - optional
Plexiglass top - optional
1/4" foam weather tape - optional

1) Holes were cut with a dremel and the PVC cleanout bodies inserted into them.

2) The Neoprene Gloves were slipped over the PVC cleanout bodies and the rubber coupling was put over the gloves.(gloves are optional)

3) A cutout was made for the viewing window, also using a dremel.(the clear box is easy enough to see through without the window, but it was added for clear viewing through the top)

4) Foam weather tape was put around the entire lid and the window cut, then the lid was put in place.(The weather tape is kind of overkill, but it was used anyway)

Now it just needs a filter. This box is extreme, but if you have the time to get the parts... why not go for it?

By no means do I think that is EXTREME.
It's how one should be made.
I commend you & your work.

I would wager.
If you follow through with everything else.
Like you did your G/B.
YOU WILL DO WELL IN THIS HOBBY.

No filter is needed.
Unless you mean the following.
The only addition I would add.
Is on each end.
Add a 2 or 3 inch hole.
Then, cover those holes with 1/8th to 3/16ths thick;
White spun-bonded polyester material.
(look at mill end, or fabric stores).

Doing so will allow for slow gas/moisture exchange.
So, when you make prints, humidity inside will equalize.
With that outside.

That way, the caps don't get yucky.
Which lessens bacteria survival rate on prints.

Nice job. That will no doubt come in handy.

If you can get your arms in without displacing any air I don't think you really need a filter. Unless you already made a hole for one of course.

It might be a good idea to use that dremel to knock the point off of those screws (if you didn't) or find something to cap them off with. Don't wanna poke or scratch yourself.

Thanks for the advice

I just thought it was extreme because it's 99% airtight, and it seems most of you who are more experienced don't use gloves that are attached to the box.(ie open holes with rubber gloves)

I liked the idea of a filter(like the one agar suggested) to make it eaiser to get in and out of the gloves. didn't even consider the humidity factor untill now. Thanks

A still air filter also minimizes any "bellows" effect.
(if g/b is not tight enough to hold a VERY mild vacuum)

I have 2.
One with no attached gloves, but I wear gloves in it.

The other sealed like a space lab - w/gloves attached.

The first is for quick easy work.
The second for extremely critical work.

Word of advice on G/B work.

Do a few practice DRY runs, FIRST.
Practice improves productivity.
ALSO MINIMIZES ERRORS.

One thing you might want to do is cut those PVC fittings down. With them full length, they don't allow your arms to move back and forth sideways while you work, which restricts movement. All you need to attach the gloves is the width of your hose clamp, so you can use a hack saw to cut the rest of the flange off, increasing your range of motion while working. Do the same on the outside threaded part. you can cut it all the way down to the last thread. Good luck.

Yes they are,not that I would by one for even half as much but I have researched it.One of my goals in this hobby and I'm sure it will take yrs and yrs of work is to eliminate EVERYTHING that looks ghetto/homemade,I guess its just the natural snob in me :snub:  There just has to be a way to buy everything so that it was professionally made and looks that way, somehow, somewhere it will be done :hehehe: .I mean if it wasn't for the legality of our little friends hollding us back everything wouldn't look so crappy cause someone would actually made and market this stuff,so Ive been looking as to where things like we need have other applications, they are always way more than anyone would want to spend but I for one would like to work in something like a laboratory that actually made me feel like I'm doing something scientific rather than look at a bunch of rusty jar lids and tyvek that has been labeled with a marker :snub:
