Cleaning a coolmist from the thrift store before using
    #6456268 - 01/13/07 05:29 PM (17 years, 2 months ago)

I recently found a few of these (picture stolen from hippiechick) coolmists at the thrift store the other day and bought all of them in case the motor I am currently using burns out I can just swap another one in. Well the one I am currently using was in great shape and didn't require much cleaning. However some of these other ones look a little sketchy and I was wondering what the best way to clean them would be. Should I just wipe down the impeller with a weak bleach solution and not worry about the grime on the inside. Or should I take them apart and clean everything I can. Also I took apart the little filter that comes with them and replaced them with two layers of activated charcoal prefilter that go to my hepa filter. Should that work? I know hippiechick said she just used micropore tape as a filter but that seemed to majorly restrict airflow. Thanks for any suggestions and thank you hippiechick for your write up on modifying your greenhouse.

Hot soapy water will clean them up.
Be sure to rinse well.
You don't need any filter on one.
To much restriction, will burn one out fairly fast.

I saw at walmart the other day some humidifier cleaner solutions that you mix with water to clean. I didn't really look at the label and read types of humidifiers it was for but might be worth looking into.

If it's really gunked up with scale, use a cup of undiluted white vinegar to soak and wipe everything down.

Then soak in a bleach solution (1 teaspoon bleach/1 gallon water).

Rinse well.

Avoid abrasives.
