Family
    #6450958 - 01/12/07 03:05 AM (14 years, 3 months ago)

I ran into a stranger as he passed by,
"Oh excuse me please" was my reply.

He said, "Please excuse me too;
I wasn't watching for you."

We were very polite, this stranger and I.
We went on our way and we said goodbye.

But at home a different story is told,
How we treat our loved ones, young and old.

Later that day, cooking the evening meal,
My son stood beside me very still.

When I turned, I nearly knocked him down.
"Move out of the way," I said with a frown.

He walked away, his little heart broken.
I didn't realize how harshly I'd spoken.

While I lay awake in bed,
God's still small voice came to me and said,

"While dealing with a stranger,
common courtesy you use,
but the family you love, you seem to abuse.

Go and look on the kitchen floor,
You'll find some flowers there by the door.

Those are the flowers he brought for you.
He picked them himself: pink, yellow and blue.

He stood very quietly not to spoil the surprise,
you never saw the tears that filled his little eyes."

By this time, I felt very small,
And now my tears began to fall.

I quietly went and knelt by his bed;
"Wake up, little one, wake up," I said.

"Are these the flowers you picked for me?"
He smiled, "I found 'em, out by the tree.

I picked 'em because they're pretty like you.
I knew you'd like 'em, especially the blue."

I said, "Son, I'm very sorry for the way I acted today;
I shouldn't have yelled at you that way."
He said, "Oh, Mom, that's okay.
I love you anyway."

I said, "Son, I love you too,
and I do like the flowers, especially the blue."

FAMILY
Are you aware that if we died tomorrow, the company
that we are working for could easily replace us in
a matter of days.
But the family we left behind will feel the loss
for the rest of their lives.

And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more
into work than into our own family,
an unwise investment indeed,
don't you think?
So what is behind the story?

I don't really care if you like it, or not. I just wanted to pass it on. That is all.

That family acronym's a stretch and I must say I disagree

Did I spell acronym correctly and did I even use it properly?

blissed, I want you to know that you have a special child there. I haven't met him, or seen him in real life, but I can feel him through the pictures, and that my friend is power. Keep him on the straight path as best you can while still letting him wander and stray and find his own way. He is a very important part of the future, more than you may know or see.

Beautiful poem, by the way.

It's crazy isn't it? He's only one year old( right? ) and already walking, saying stuff ( dancing  ), and showing signs of extreme genius. I had the pleasure to hang out with big and little man to observe first hand. He's a happy( and lucky) kid

Nice poem blissed, I think its serves as a pretty good reminder about the perspective we need to take in our day to day lives.

And wow! is he ever getting big!! Its amazing how quickly kids grow and learn, those are the kinds of things you really don't want to miss out on.

Yeah, indeed.... A friend & co-worker of mine is in the military, and his fiance told him that before he deploys, she wants something from him; a kid. Basically so she has something to concentrate on while he's off at war and something to remember him by if he doesn't make it back.  WTF!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

He was pretty happy about this actually, but commented on how he wants to have a child to experience fatherhood, and doesn't want to miss out that.  I told him that he REALLY needs to sit down and talk with her, cause that's some seriously fucked up shit. To say the least...    My cousin was in a similar boat, getting deployed while his wife was pregnant, and then deployed again a couple months after his son was born. A couple more of my friends were/are also in that same boat, and that shit sucks.  Hopefully these two figure everything out.

Anyway, Blissed...I still can't believe he's only a year old!  You've got yourself a really special one there.

I hope you have already bought your son the entire Calvin and Hobbes collection, assuming you don't already have it. I swear I learned more about vocabulary, humor, art and life from that comic strip than from all of elementary and junior high school put together.
