Are these things pressure treated? and if so will that inhibit mycelium growth

Hmmm, I do not know. I use hardwood dowels and they colonize (the outside) just fine. I am not sure if they are treated in any way, it does not say anything on the outside of the package.

Hey Penguin, I think we both have a similar experience. I went to home depot and bought some 2-3 ft long hardwood dowel. Tied a series of constrictor knots along the bundle and took a skillsaw to it. These colonized just fine, and have been plugged into alder logs [reishi].
From GGMM/TMC I remember reading that the spirally-scored dowels are better because the mycelium can survive in the spiral groove better after being pounded into a tight hole. I don't know if it's necessary or not, but to be safe and to ensure success with these logs I purchased some FP pre-colonized dowels.
Now the funny thing is, after all that home depot/skillsaw work, my roommate looks at the FP dowels and says "those are furniture dowels". Apparantly, when building furniture they use the thick spirally-grooved dowels. I had no idea. So there's the source, I think. Hardwood, pre-cut, spirally grooved furniture dowels.
Will let you know what I find, but I can assure you that the home depot type dowels will COLONIZE just fine. Can't say for sure if they will take to plugging, though.

Here's the ones I bought to give you an idea;

Aha, lookie what I found. . .

You can even pick what kind of wood. "PIN 0375", the 3/8" by 1 1/2" seem about right. . .

perhaps if i used a slightly larger drill bit, it would leave room, and now scrap the mycelim off of the out side.

but also, since mycelium colonizes the inside, wouldn'd it jsut regrow? in theory? i know how finiky mycelium can be after damaged, especially with certain edibles....hmmm

I just got a bag of furniture dowels, however they are longitudinally grooved and I don't know from what type of wood are they made of.
How long do you soak them before spawning?
How long do you have to sterilize?

Yes, do soak them for a few hour. I would also sterilize them, especially if you are inoculating with grain spawn. Be safe and cook em for an hour.
