water does evaporate when not completely sealed up in a bed.
i looked in my tit the other day and it was running w/o water in it.
(also)
i bought a super powered fish tank heater... don't do that. here's a lesson. buy the cheepest one. your not heating that much water in a tit.
i found that the first one i bought at the lowest setting heat it well over 100 F.

Oatman, that seems odd. Aquarium heaters should be set to auto-shut off by temperature, not by time cycles.... therefore, there should be no reason that heater would get that hot. Perhaps the internal thermostat was busted?
I have a 200W submersible in a cereal dispenser filled with water (heat bomb type setup in a converted ice cooler), and it keeps a rock solid 85*F, and in order to do so I have to crank it to about 3/4 of it's hottest temp... granted, it will heat that cooler up in less than an hour...:D

Aside from waterbed heaters being too dangerous to use in mycology, you don't heat fruiting chambers unless you want condensation forming all over the walls and lid. Simply heat the room the fruiting chamber is in if necessary. You don't need to be above 70F. 70F to 80F is fine. RR

65 isn't ideal but it will still probably work, it might be just a little slower however. If you decide to build an incubator using the tub-in-tub tek don't make the dumb mistake I did and overfill the bottom bin causing a huge spill when the top bin is weighed down.

Yep.... water everywhere. Condensation on my cakes...ugh.
Things are still looking good, I think. Lots of fluffy, cloud-like mycellium forming. Maybe some knots, too. Only one problem... I might see the start of some bluish-green area and the top center of two of my cakes? I don't know if it would come through in a pic... Anyway..
What are the main factors in the cause of blue-green mold?
I picked up a couple of the cakes and I noticed fluffy white stuff growing through the vermiculite layer on the bottom? I scraped as much as I safely could when I birthed them... will pins start growing on the underside of the cakes? EEK!

How do I raise the humidity in my FC?
I have a Rubbermaid, no holes drilled, hydroton and water on the bottom. My hygrometer reads 90%. There is condensation on the sides and top of the container. When I lift the lid to fan my cakes, the water rolls of the lid!

Your hygrometer seems off. If you see that water is condensing on the sides of the FC and dripping down the sides (and the temperature has been fairly constant... no heat cycling) then you usually have around 95-100% RH....
Water doesn't condense out of the air unless it's very close to or beyond full saturation (100% RH). If the sides of the bin are cooler than the center of the FC, this can throw this off, though - similar to having a cold drink out in the summer - you'll have condensation all over the place.

Well... guess what I found when I went to feed the pooches tonight. My little cakes have produced their first groovy little pins! How exciting! I will take some pictures in the morning sunlight tomorrow and figure out how to post them! I hope they develop nicely! How long does it take for it to mature into a shroom?? are we talking days or hours here? BTW,,, I inoculated these cakies on December 20th!
