Red Eyes

I've noticed that, no matter how stoned I get, whether I'm at home or at work, my eyes never seem to get bloodshot. Definitely a desireable trait when going out and about while stoned.
Is this common? Why might it be that my eyes don't get all red? I thought it was a generalization that one's eyes would get bloodshot.

It has to do with how much you smoke... I pack my onehitter with PRIMO bud, so one hit is all I need. Your eyes may get a little 'glassy' when stoned, but bloodshot is from smoking tons of bud.
I think. My eyes are rarely bloodshot unless I am smoking all night.

My eyes never get red anymore unless I smoke massive amounts. People usually can never tell that I'm high.

it depends on the bud I'm smoking
Recently what I've had, yea. One of my friends, his whole family has chronic red-eye, so it's never really possible to tell if the bud has any effect or him or not.
oh yea, I was surprised to see you make this thread till I read it

I've been packing one-hitters of some nice, sticky stuff for the last six hours or so, totally relaxing. The one hitter is making sure it doesn't burn too quickly, and all of the resiny gobs get their chance to burn. No red eyes.
I can recall having red eyes while stoned, before, when I was younger. Perhaps after use for a long time the effect dissipates?

I only get bloodshot eyes when smoking at night - never while the sun is up.

Anyways, not the case here. I used to smoke up before work when I was on overnights and the eyes were still crystal-clear.
I'd love to understand the science involved in the red eye thing.

I could not find any studies that directly answered your question. However, based upon evidence obtained from studies on other tissues and after conferring with Dr. Paul McGuire (Department of Cell Biology and Physiology, University of New Mexico), I believe that the answer is that marijuana (specifically, cannabinoids) produce vasodilation (increased caliber of blood vessels). The paper written by C. Hillard (reference 1) listed below reviews evidence that marijuana produces vasodilation. In many cases, there is evidence that this effect may be mediated by what are termed CB1 receptors. Although this paper does not discuss effects of cannabinoids on vasuclature in the eye, Porcella et al. (see reference 2) demonstrate that there are significant numbers of CB1 receptors in the eye. So, it is possible that marijuana dilates the blood vessels in the eye by binding to CB1 receptors.
Your question may also be related to the interest of a number of scientists / pharmaceutical companies in developing and using synthetic cannabinoids for the treatment of glaucoma. The antiglaucoma properties of marijuana is the result of its ability to lower intraocular pressure (which may, in part, be due to its ability to produce vasodilation). The Porcella paper lists several references related to this topic.

So perhaps my CB1 receptors in my eyes have developed a tolerance?

I think this topic was on my mind because I'm on overnights again at work, and a lot of the customers I bump into are stoned and their eyes are red.

Anytime im high my eyes are quite red and puffy. Luckily i found the best working eyedrops, Visine-A, it has an antihistimine to reduce puffy eyelids as well.

Apparently it's because once you become more experienced with smoking, your eyes don't get as blood shot anymore.

My eyes get very red. Not really fond of this whenever I smoke and go see a movie, because it is oh so blatant.
