I can find WBS cheaper and closer to me. I don't even really take out sunflower seeds I just take out floaters which might include a few sunflower seeds.

Also WBS does serve as more bulk inoculation points due to its size.

I use a 75% rye 25% birdseed mix. I do these for the previously stated reason, WBS has more inoc points. I dunno if this is right or not but I believe rye has a higher N content so its good for the health of the mushies.

Keep in mind, unless you are using that Rye or WBS to make grain spawn, you are not doing a bulk grow. Its just grain. But if you use the myceliated grain to inoculate a bulk sub, then your are doing a bulk grow.

That being said, IME, WBS is better for bulk.  I don't know about fruiting off Rye as I have never done that, in fact I haven't used it much for grain spawn either, WBS can be tricky sometimes when it gets sticky, but when you get it right, its a thing of beauty.

WBS is alot cheaper than Rye. Rye is said to have more nutes, WBS is most convenient for spawn.

If you did a search u'd find too many results to read man. Rye is also said to contam more by sopme because of the texture of the grain.

Some people swear by rye, I've had best results with WBS.
Rye takes more time to hydrate with a soak.
WBS soaks up moisture quicker, care must be taken to make sure it's not over hydrated.
WBS is around 8 dollars for 40 lbs.
Rye is about 5 bucks for 40 lbs at the feed store.

Wild birds prefer WBS.

Rye hands down! Nutes are much more readily available because it's an open whole grain not a seed with a husk. I have done 100lbs of rye and switched to WBS which I've gone through hundreds of pounds doing bulk and there is a big difference I only switched to cut costs and yes yields did suffer.

If its bacterial contamination you may want to try a longer soak so the endospores are "Awake" and get killed in the PC

I've personally been using rye and the only contams I got were from a contam'd syringe. Just did 24 jars tonight and 24 are already colonizing, none contam.

I haven't used rye, but I am currently using Hard red winter wheat and Spelt grains, so it should be similar.

I don't mind using either grains, but the rye type grains are a bit less messier.
