What are your plans for the future?
    #6436290 - 01/07/07 10:29 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I'm gonna drop out of college... well cause I dont feel any
passion for it. I went there thinking "its something to do now that I'm
finished school"..... but something always felt wrong for me....
I didnt like the superficial scene I was in, did'nt like the
people (90%) I was around... I thought.... well shit... I'm not
enjoyning this do why bother?????????

I am going to drop out, work full time to build some money on top of
my savings and then travel as much as I can for the next two
years because that is what will make me genuinley happy.

Any kind of comments, advice apprecitated

Don't drop out of college because when you're not making enough money a couple years down the line and you can't seem to find a good job, well then you'll understand.

And I speak out of experience.

  Switch majors to something you're passionate about or more interested in.  It's so much easier to do it now, while you're young.  If youw ait, and travel, and work, things will get in the way and you'll push off going back.  And it will be harder then, because you'll have been out of "school mode" for so long, that it will be harder to adjust.  Do it now, while you're young, and it will benefit you greatly in the future.

You know man, SOOO many people have said that to me but I really
dont care about money....

Complete college, get a good job, settle down

I've already read that book and the ending seems cilched

I made this post because I have the feeling that I dont
want to live a /normal/ life!

I actually get freaked out looking at people I work with...
they are there for a decade or more to come....
with nothing more to come "home" to on a thursday night than an
evening full of television..... I do NOT want that

Sometimes I feel let down or konned by the society I'm living
in and the only way out seems to be to -drop out- and explore
our people and this planet as much as I can?

Has anyone else followed this line?

I shall only live once In my present state of mind.....

I actually started in college this year, I could have started a
year or two ago but It just didnt happen....

But now that I've been there I have an undenialable urge to get OUT
of where I am and experience as much as I can... exploration,
adventure, call it what you will... no one, else just me.

Career, house, car, mortage.... its all starting to lose meaning

Maybe you should shift your focus from the "people" and the "scene" for a while, and concentrate on bettering yourself through learning and studying.

You say you don't want a "cliched" life, but h ow do you plan on doing all the traveling and exploring you want without income? What about having a family (maybe in the distant future).

I would like to graduate from a univerisity in Canada or the UK and become a Sociology or History professor. What will probably happen is I will graduate from Rutgers and become a high school teacher or a social worker.

I've travelled quite a bit over the past year, like I've said,
I could be in my third year of college. I have a nice bit of cash
saved up and if I drop out and work full time I'll make more than enough to keep me going for a long while....

Seriously.... at the bottom of all this is the feeling that I dont
want to be middle aged and living the same day after and after and after....

I plan to graduate this spring with my bachelors, take a year off to study, work, and travel, and then head off to law school.

there are alot of things worse than having a "mundane" routine if you consider it that. why dont you find something that really interests you and excel in it? i didn't necessarily like the people or scene if you will of my first several years of college, however the deeper i went into school the more i liked it. either way you dont leave yourself many options later in life without having an education. its your choice man do what you think is best for you. some people college isnt for them, however you will at least need to develop some sort of skills to get by whether they are school related or not.

There is nothing like some good 'ol fashioned direct experience.
Some of these posters are right though, you may look back at this whole situation in retrospect and realize that staying in school is the best long term plan.
BUT.... you gotta follow your heart. Get out there and see the world. Who knows, you might end up with a career option that you never ever would have considered had you not dropped out.
