Pereskiopsis rooting trouble...advice?
    #6425304 - 01/04/07 05:09 PM (17 years, 3 months ago)

If you have experience rooting Pereskiopsis cuttings, please take a look at these pics and offer any advice you may have. Pay particular attention to the yellowing/orange leaves. Thanks in advance.

conditions -
calloused cuttings
rooting in cactus potting soil 5 days now
room temp/humidity (70f/55%)
window sunlight (Winter here in Zone 7 - 10.5 hours sun/day)
bottom watered twice so far, quite moist soil

Thanks!

Are they too close to said window and gettin a cold draft making their little tent too cold?Soil temp and room temp can be very different they may need a heat pad to inspire better rooting, the ones for snake tanks from pet shops are pretty safe.OUTSIDE of the box not in it where it'll get wet.
May also be some hellafied shock where they beat up when you started too root them or is this just now occuring?
Also unless you just watered when you took that pic, that soil looks just a touch over saturated.

they dont look so happy...

maybe they would benefit from some higher temps and humidity when they are rooting... ?

i just recieved some pereskiopsis cuttings today, rooted, but not well rooted.
so ive potted them up, watered them and put them in a propagator, 80% humidity & 24c, in a bright place but not in direct light...
not sure if ive done right though

looks like they got a draft maybe

or possibly just damped off from the overly moist environment/soil.

are the all yellow ones squishy?

root them in a glass of water on the windowsill. you dont even need to wait for the stems to callous. change the water every day also.
I started with 1 cutting almost a year ago and now I have rooted over 100 of them. they just keep multiplying. I even traded out a lot of them because I have so many.

Try Rootone, I used this on my pereskiopsis and had no plants go unrooted... The way I did it was to let my intitial supply of 15 pereskiopsis grow to about 10 inches, then I cute em into three inch sections, rooted the sections, which have become a pereskiopsis growth tip factory... putting out a new tip every few weeks. Also might help to add more porous material (ie perlite) to the soil, the pereskiopsis roots like to branch out, and the less work they have to do to get through the soil, the better.

Are those webs all over the stalks?

That last pic sure looks like it.....especially on the most dramatically effected ones.

May be time to re-evaluate the cause if they are.

i think this was the biggest problem, soil really was saturated, water-logged in fact. i added a lot of perlite in and replanted. will hold off on any more watering for a bit. thanks!

Good Luck!  Just don't overwater/overhumidify them, that was my mistake.

Updated on Rooting Pereskiopsis [Re: zekesdream]
    #6434324 - 01/07/07 10:57 AM (17 years, 3 months ago)

UPDATE:
Thanks to everyone for all the advice so far.
I've made some adjustments and things seem to have stabilized.

I removed the cuttings from what I found to be soaking wet soil. I added in about 1/3 part Perlite to the existing cactus soil mix and allowed it to dry some for a day.
Then, I dipped the Pereskiopsis cuttings into Rootone rooting hormone and placed them about 1/2 to 1 in. into the soil, just deep enough that they stand in place.
