question on straw and humidity
    #6429071 - 01/05/07 09:37 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I am about to start a bulk straw grow using a single tub, but my question is do you really have to run a coolmist? Could the grow sustain high enough humidity without it? Basically what i'm asking is can you do the straw in a monotub type of grow, just leave the lid on after casing and let it sit?

You don't need a coolmist or any other type of humidifer in a tub. Yes, the straw substrate will provide plenty of humidity. Just be sure to fan several times per day.

Well i've got a few air pumps that i could use that are now being used in my PMP. If i plumb the hoses into the tub, it'll probably take care of the FAE. I was just unsure if the humidity would stay up, I've never done any type of full tub grow before.

You'll still want to fan. It's not just FAE you want, but actual wind and turbulence now and then to 'wash' the stale air out of the casing layer itself. I believe in keeping it simple with tubs. You can simply drill a few holes top and bottom for FAE rather than using a pump. Just remember as said above, fan vigorously a few times a day. This removes the CO2 that is trapped deep within the casing layer, which is a pinning trigger.(reduction in CO2)
