hmmm? how about a post-structural analysis of how pynchon?s choice of words, and his use of simile and metaphor is code to further marginalize aquatic wild-life.

he?s just trying to keep "greenie" down!

My book arrived on Friday, however I won't be able to pick it up until Monday. I should be able to hammer it out in a couple of days I think, I read fairly rapidly. I'm eager to begin discussion of this book and if it appeals to me I plan on reading Gravity's Rainbow in the future. I talked to my brother about Pynchon and he gave him extremely high praise.
So what's it look like, 6 or so of us for discussion? Not too shabby but I was hoping for more. This is the first book tho so I'm sure we can recruit more as we go. Reading for me unfortunately has become a lost form of entertainment. Damn internet anyway.

kermit, haha....that made me chuckle...

buzzdoctor, choke it down. It's one of his easier reads.

I'm preparing a post for Thursday on the reading.

I think it will be better to start a new post on Vineland rather than continue in this thread that ahs nothing to do with the actual analysis.....

I got a copy today. It's not the 1997 Penguin one.
I can't remember. Brown, I think. That's the publisher,
I think.
I'm going to read it.

Okay, since everyone's not on the same page, we have a couple options.

We could start discussion on say, the first three chapters on Tuesday.

Or we could give a couple of weeks for everyone to catch up and start discussion on the entire book say a week from next Wednesday.

I think we should have as many people taking part in this as possible, rather then being in a hurry to start.

I'm on chapter 9, should have it finished by this weekend. I'll go along with either suggestion, I'd probably rather have the discussion on the entire book but if it's chapter-by-chapter I think it'd be best if everyone had finished the book. There may be things brought up that are towards the end but will be discussed in earlier chapters also.

Wheres PGF in all of this?

What type of forum are we following? A chapter-by-chapter discussion or the entire book in general?

thanks for pushing it back- ill have it done by then. hows the discussion goint to work, btw? ive had several ideas (well, the kind that usually end up as papers when a professor says to write about a novel youve been assigned...) are we going to be posting essay type things and have people respond, or have someone (pgf?) lead a discussion with some questions, or...? just thinking ahead...

im liking it, (about 1/2 way done), but i keep thinking "mucho maas!" and havent had that excitement about anyone yet. maybe soon?

I was wondering about the same thing osc. First, i thought I should write up an essay and have responses....but that's not really a discussion about the novel...so, I guess a few questions...maybe some short insights to get the ball rolling and just let the discussion develop from there....

I think maybe the IRC chat at #bookclub or whatever the channel will be will have to be a bit more structured so that everyone is not talking at once or cross talking...

It should be fairll easy to track discussion here...but in real time, on IRC, it may be a little more chaotic.

mason & dixon...
whew... don't drop it on yr foot ... transit of venus observ'd in africa, battle at sea, royal society politics, laying the line in america with varied cast of colonials, natives, ghosts, golems, mechanical ducks, talking dogs, chinese geomancers, ley lines, hollow earthers, jesuit intrigues, all stirred well into a tasty burgoo, maybe...
