Okay so I can't draw anything beyond a stick figure. But I can sometimes, usually on accident, come up with something interesting in photoshop. Something like this: (lemme know what ya think)
A long time ago I even tried my hand at "painting" in photoshop. Here is one sample:
Thoughts & Comments appreciated.

i like the 2nd one a WHOLE lot better than the first. you should progress your skills on the 2nd one. it has good depth and color. the balance is a little heavy on the left side of the image with not a whole lot to counter balance it on the right; that might just be me though.

Yeah, I like the first one but it seems almost like some kind of commercial art piece or something, *shrug*. The second one was a limited attempt at "painting" in photoshop. The only other sample I can find is this one: (and it's only so-so).

id say stop using photoshop and do something by hand before you use photoshop cos youre using it as a medium and not a tool
and its not a good medium, i can see the particular filters and faux-illustration brushes instantly

Yeah, that second one is crap in that way and has more of the photoshop "tricks" to it. As for doing something by hand, not really sure where to start. I lack supplies, space and technique of any sort. Heh. Maybe if I ever go back to school I'll take an art class.

My advice? Try as hard as you can to avoid the Filters menu. That is the biggest problem I see with people starting out in photoshop. You cannot rely on those filters, otherwise where is the originality? Anyone can put a lens flare and a wave filter on an image, and anyone with experience can tell you exactly what filters were used, just by looking at the image. Its when you can learn how to use the filters sparingly without people noticing them, then you have mastered the use of photoshop.
BTW, I like the painting work much better than the first image. I realize I said this in another thread today too, but I really like the color scheme. That light blue color goes nice with the yellow.

I try to avoid the filters, except in combinations to achieve certain effects. The lens flare in the first one honestly was me just being lazy and bored, but it wound up working in a way I liked. I probably could have come up with a similar result another way, but *shrug*.
Most of my photoshop technique has been of the photo-editing variety (ie for photoshop contests on fark.com, etc).
