Casing Layers for Agrocybe aegerita
    #6414660 - 01/01/07 12:22 AM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Okay, so most edibles require a non sterilized or pasteurized casing layer - I am familiar with this from growing Agaricus species, but I am unsure what to do with my Agrocybe aegerita block. I have read that they benefit greatly from a casing layer and was planning on going that route as I only have one test block right now. Nowhere in any literature can I find any info on whether or not they require a sterilized/pasteurized casing layer. Any thoughts? Thanks!!

not exactly true..most edibles i know of dont even need a casing layer at all. like the agrocybe.. if it grows on wood most likely it doesnt need a casing layer at all.. the only one i know of that does is stropharia ruguso-anulata. and thats only if you are growing it indoors

Agrocybe aegerita does not need a casing layer to fruit, but it´s easier to grow with a casing layer. A plastic bin and misting manually once or twice daily is all needed if you case it. Peat moss + CaCO3 works very good.

Good point, I worded this incorrectly. I meant to say that most edibles needing a casing layer reuqire one that is un sterilized or pasteurized.

I see, thank you. I will try this one with a casing layer (I am fruiting it in a full-size growing room to obtain fruitbodies for cloning and experiment further then.

It´s a very easy to grow shroom, easier than oysters (for me). It will grow even with the least air exchange possible, but if you want to get short stems and big caps air exchange is important then.
