Tiny Bugs are eating my babies!!!

HELP! My shrooms have been wilting and turning dark and decaying before they're fully grown. Today I found tiny (like .5 cm) greyish bugs... too small to clearly make out exactly what type... either a tiny fly like creature or maybe mites... they're shaped like a tiney grain of rice, and there are hundreds of them eating into the stems and sitting on the caps. (My roommate assures me that he can see the bugs too, so ';m pretty sure they're there. What Can I Do To Kill The Little Bastards That Wont Hurt My Crop?!?!?!?!!? Please help!

The easiest thing would be to dump them and start over. Be sure that you pasteurize or sterilize any substrate or casing mixture before you use it to kill off any eggs. Also be sure that any vent holes are plugged with polyfill or have a screen over them to keep the insects out of the terrarium.
If you want to try and kill them off, you have a few options, though these are off the top of my head... no idea how well they will work. First, I think you will probably lose your current flush. I would get rid of all the fruit and pins that I could. If I could strip off the casing layer, I would do that also. You can then try to soak what is left in h2o2 for 12 hours or so. That might do the trick.
If you feel really daring, get a pack of cigs and soak them in water for 24 hrs. Get rid of the cigs and use the tabaco water as an insecticide. Nicotine is a very powerful poison. I have used this method with house plants, but never with mushies.. donno for sure what it would do to the mycelium/fruit.
I would not use an insect spray of any type on them. I would be too worried about the poison getting concentrated in the fruit and people getting sick.
Again, I haven't tried any of this... just guesses on my part.

Thanks for the advice. For the moment I'm holding out hope and trying to exterminate them. As a preliminary measure, I filled a mason jar with rubbing alchohol soaked paper towel, then I sealed the bin and let it heat up. If the gas chamber trick doesnt work... (I'm sure it wont help with the eggs...) I guess I'll have to try scraping everything down. I'll post results as they come. -RM

there is a pest strip out there that will kill crawling and flying insects you can hang it in the closet for a few days and see the results. It is made by Hot Shot. I have used one for some time now and have had no return of the mean ol bugs. Don't let it come in contact with any thing though because it does contain poison. Only hang it in the vicinity of you experiment. It works best in a closed room in order to concentrate its power.

I have a knacking feeling that these bugs landed on sterile substate after he cooked it, rather than surviving the intense heat of his sterilization process.. If there were any flaws in his sterilisation, wouldn't he have bugs and green mold/bacteria/other nasty contams?

They actually eat the mycelium and dig into it to lay eggs. I watched a few sad looking cakes in wonder for a week, before I threw in the towel on their little world. sorry bugs:)
