penicillium fight off?
    #641211 - 05/23/02 02:52 AM (22 years, 8 months ago)

i noticed a small fraction of the rice i used in my pf-like cakes seemed to be contaminated with penicillium mold and they're becoming visible now. is it possible to fight it off somehow? does it inflict a lot of damage on cubes/azures? thanks...

thanks anno.
nice lesson, i wont ever use old grain again. is simmering it overnight useful for getting those grain endospores germinated? would a PC have had them killed?
i know i should throw it all out and i don't mind losing the substrate (10 pints!), but do you think i can save my strains by making a mycelium syringe out of the mycelium growing on the vermi seal at the top? i was thinking also of using the azure's vermi seal in order to innoculate cardboard... in the end, the penicillum are in the grain...

You don't need to simmer, just soak in water for at least 12 hrs and no more than 24 hrs. Direct exposure to steam at 131C (15psi) for 15 minutes is usually enough to kill most contamination. If used correctly, your PC should kill them. Remember, it takes a while for the steam to penetrate the jars and grains so you need to increase the 15 minutes upwards to 1-1.5 hrs.

Most likely if you try to transfer the myclium from a contaminated source you will transfer the contamination as well. Not 100% of the time, but close enough to make it fairly pointless. I wouldn't bother trying unless you have agar to grow the mycelium out on. You can then tell quickly (within a few days) if the contamination came along as well.
