Innoculation - Alternative to syringes?
    #641078 - 05/22/02 10:45 PM (21 years, 10 months ago)

Hey everyone
I was just wondering that from a spore print, is there any other reliable ways of innoculating a substrate jar other than using a syringe? Cause I don't think no doctors are gonna be wanting to give me any syringes. Thanks for your help -

You can get what you need at most farm supply type stores. syringes arent controlled. Neither are really huge needles like the oned you want. 16 or 18 gage.

And if you get questioned just avoid the topic, or say it`s for your science project???
I`ve got a son so he uses it for his experiments

Thanks guys I will try to get ahold of a syringe....but that doesnt really answer my question....what are the alternatives to using a syringe? Or is syringe by far the superior method? (I am in New Zealand so its not as easy to get ahold of stuff as it is in the states)

>what are the alternatives to using a syringe?

If you are using shakeable grain substrates you can scrape the spores directly into the sterilized grain.

With PF-Cakes you need a syringe.

I am an ass - how many times have I taken that extra step and made syringes???? Does scraping the spores work comparably to liquid innoculant via syringe? I don't mind a little extra wait time, if I can ditch the syringe-making step.
I'm currently using a homemade glove box, grains and syringes with nice results. If I just scrape spores directly from the print, will I need to increase sterility for any reason?

Well, with a syringe you can inoculate through a small hole...

When you are scraping spores into the jar, you have to open it a bit more....

But you have the same step with making syringes also, so this shouldn?t matter.

One difference would be that the spores are already presoaked when in syringe, thus they will germinate a bit faster.
