PC Problems
    #6406924 - 12/29/06 12:39 AM (17 years, 2 months ago)

So, I just tried using a PC for the first time. I got it used through a trade. After letting the PC heat up for about 20 minutes on medium-high heat, I noticed no steam coming from the vent on top, nor through either of the safety valves, but large amounts of steam were coming from around where the two handles align. Is this due to improper alignment, or is there a problem with the rubber gasket sealing? It's a Mirro pressure cooker with a rocker, but no pressure guage. I'm sorry if this is the wrong board, I didn't know where to put this.

Sounds like a gasket problem... You would know if you sealed it wrong its pretty hard to do that wrong.... Or the pot could be warped... I have had a PC warp on me b4 and the top no longer fit correctly.

It doesn't sound good. Take the lid off and hold it up to a light, if you can't see through the vent hole, you have found your problem (hopefully) You could also need a new seal, but check the vent first.

Thanks. I actually just found a thing in the manual online that gives me a lot of hope. Apparently if there was some water on the gasket or handle it will steam for a bit but once the pressure has built up it will stop. Also, if the gasket has shrunk a little I can try gently stretching it out some. I've got several options, including the vent tube being plugged, I'm going to check all of this out then let you guys know what I figured out, if anything. I really appreciate the quick replies. I've never used a pressure cooker before, so I was a nervous wreck about it anyway.

If you get it to work, once the steam starts comming out of weighted nozzle at a pretty consistent pace you need to turn down the heat to medium. If you do this the steam will come out less often and this is what you want. Any steam comming out of the main weighted nozzle is excess pressure, once it has built up pressure it only need a little bit of heat to keep it at that same pressure. You might even be able to set it to low once it has built up pressure but I need mine on medium.

I'm afraid I just figured out what is wrong. The spring safety device appears to be broken and therefore does not close to prevent pressure from escaping when the lid is closed. I have to replace the handle...

**Edit**
Not sure if that's it or not...I'm going to keep tinkering with it as I figure as long as steam is escaping I can't blow myself up and that's my only fear since I'm smart enough to avoid scalding steam...we'll see.

Safety vents on those models should not vent until excessive pressures are reached. First thing to do is check the rocker vent and make sure it's not plugged the wipe then gasket down with petroleum jelly lightly do not use vegetable oil as this will deteriorate the gasket over time. If this doesn't help then the gasket has shrunk too much but understand how the gaskets are formed they have a "V" built into them so as pressure builds the "V" expands and seals this means that if you squeeze the handles together as the steam tries to escape it will allow the gasket to trap the pressure, remember to wear hotpads (DUH!)then you can release your grip after a minute or two. This has worked for me plenty of times in the past but be careful and get a new gasket on order because an excessively shrunken one can blow (it has happened to me once)! GL and be cautious
