Except that any of his parts that I've been unwillingly exposed to seem to remain within the scope of one octave or less. He has no range. Just like Nickelback's catalogue.

If drugs have taught us anything, I would hope it would be that everything about Nickelback sucks without compromise, but not as bad as Coldplay.

I agree with you on both fronts. Nickelback and Coldplay.. meh. But a lot of people like 'em so we can't really say they're bad.

I just think Nickelback is the perfect example of popular music today. People don't care about solos, intricate progression of the music, the talent, etc. People just want to turn on their radio and sing a long to something catchy. To each his own.

As for great singers today. XTina, yeah she's got a voice.

most trained male singers can sing in that range by the way, its just considered too feminine

Too bad this isnt the worst singles thread or you would be dead on. However, he does have a pretty awesome voice despite the fact the songs are crap.

Personally, I like think the best vocalists out there are the following (pardon me for not knowing names):

Josh Groban
Michael Buble
The lead singer of DragonForce
Dave Grohl
Scott Klopfenstein from Littlest Man Band and back up singer of Reel Big Fish
The chick that sings the song called Black Horse and A Cherry Tree (or something to that extent)

that chick from supernova (the one everyone thought was a huge smack addict) is off the chain.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=koleQx92qQc
She has that Tina Turner-like delivery and great pitch. Should've won ;/

Whitney Houston IMO had the best voice i've ever heard on a woman...before the crack. 3 octaves of range and unnerving control of it.

And James brown...not so much for vocals but just makin funk/soul popular. Open tons of doors.

Tons haven't been mentioned.

Older Metal/Rock Singers, No screaming, Broad Vocal Range:
Iron maiden - Bruce dickinson
Dream Theater - James Labrie
Pain of Salvation - Daniel Gildenlöw
Dream Evil - Niklas Isfeldt
Evergrey - Tom S. Englund
Rush - Geddy Lee
Devin Townsend

Newer Metal/Rock Singers, who can scream and sing:
Killswitch engage - Howard Jones, Jesse Leach
All That Remains - Phil Labonte
Avenged Sevenfold - M. Shadows

For growling and lower range singing, of course, the one and only (already mentioned) is:
Opeth - Mikael Åkerfeldt

And if you like good emotional singing, DEFINITELY check out Anthony Green and Dallas Green.

Definately. Excellent technique with a powerful voice. She isnt taken to seriously because she did disco hits and her popularity went with the era..

Bruce Dickinson from iron Maiden. Good mention. He screams as well but you can definately tell that he has every note he yelps unlike that dude from Linkin Park :P

Thats Billy Corgan... I wouldnt put him up with the best. Musically he is one of the most innovative rock guitarists, but vocally he is mediocre.
