It should be submerged in water.

I have a 200 watt, it is glass and it simply floats directly under the 'floor' of my second tub without issue. Depending on the composition of your plastic this anecdotal evidence may be useless, so I'd say monitor the bottom of the unit after having it powered up for a few hours... before stacking it full of jars

You shouldn't need a heater in a TIT if the temps in your home are anywhere above 60 degrees man. Try it without it first.

My heater came with two suction cups that can be mounted on either end. I stuck it to the bottom tub and then placed some 1/2 pint jars in there to keep the upper tub from touching it. This system has been working perfectly for me.

Agreed, an incubator is not necessary if you can keep the room your jars are in above 70F. Below that, growth slows down a lot. 75F is a perfect balance in my opinion between stimulating mycelium growth and not stimulating bacterial and thermophilic mold growth.

i agree, i will never use a tit again.  At 75 degrees they go nearly as fast, it's easier, and it doesn't promote contam growth as much.
