1st timer Australian
    #6402082 - 12/24/06 04:04 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Hello everyone,
This is my first time cultivating mushrooms. And im not even so sure about the strain im using; Anyone with information regarding Australian? Is it Cubensis?
Anyways I used 8 sterilizied (pressure cooker) glasses with vermiculite, rice flour, and distilled water. then used tin foil as lids. Made 2 inoculation holes and about 1-1.5 cc per Glass.
I also used distilled water making the syringe.
The glasses are incubating 3 days now at 27-28c degrees and i think i already see some fuzzy mycelium that im not so sure about.A picture wont be comprehendable enough. For now, no contams are visible.
Wish me luck guys.. ill be back with pics as soon as possible i hope
thanks

You aren't sure if it's Cubensis? Didn't it say on the place you bought it from?

I got then from the FSRE. It only had AUSTRALIAN written on it.
I think it is cubensis though...

It's probably cubensis. Did you you sterilize the distilled water before you made the syringe?

Good luck!

i was as sterile as i could
here are pictures from the fifth day

http://img336.imageshack.us/img336/4963/dsc00989mp3.jpg

today is the 6th day and out of 8 glasses i inoculated 5 have mycelium on them, its kinda fuzzy mycelium as you can see but im happy cuz this is my first time.
i dont know what to do with the 3 other glasses... should i wait to see if mycelium shows up on them or pass?
i also inoculated yesterday two jars of rye seed and one PF cake with Thai spores. The spores were weird, they werent really visible like the Australian. I hope i did it right.
Well, tell me what you think people, i cant wait till i see the first fruit  haaaa

there's aussie psilocybe cubensis, psilocybe subcubensis (known locally as "gold caps" and/or "gold tops"), psilocybe subaeruginosa, and copelandia cyanescens (the latter is known locally as "blue meanies")

anyways, good luck with the grow dude
pity FSRE doesn't shed much light on their website either:

http://www.fsre.nl/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=50&Itemid=57

You should def. follow these babies through to fruiting and give them a nice big picture!

So far so good. Keep em incubated and keep an eye out for any contamination.

ummm
well thanks for all the feedback
but i still have a few questions.
Now i know almost for sure after 7 days that 5 jars are with mycelium and 3 others arent.
Im almost sure mycelia wont develeop in these 3 jars anymore cuz its been a week y'know..... should i discard them?
Oh and another thing... Im using the fish tank heater method ti incubate, i set the heat for 30 degrees cuz i think that if i put it on 27-28 its actually lower than that.
some new pics...
http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/4985/dsc01011xr0.jpg - first jar
http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/8708/dsc01013ne2.jpg - second jar
http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/7130/dsc01016di2.jpg - third jar
http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/8495/dsc01018kf8.jpg - fourth jar
the fifth doesnt have quite visible enough mycelium so i didnt take pictures
No visible contams on any of the five jars as you can see.
The newley inoculated Rye jars with Thai spores are at 2nd day incubating and are still showing no mycelium.
Check it out, thanks

whoa buddy, one week is one week - it might take that whole week just for two spores from your syringe/print to find eachother and make sweet holy matrimony all over your uncle's rye grain/substrate a la miscelania  :humpme:

in any case, just keep the 3 you want to throw away for another week! In the mean time, why not knock up some honey lc to pass the time? :hook:

sup
I recently noticed strange bluish-greenish-geryish discolorations on some of my jars. Im not sure if these are contaminations. It also looks to me maybe theyre too wet or humid.
Here is a pictue of one of the jars.
http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/5959/dsc01043tv4.jpg
what do you think?
I'll upload some new pictures soon. I also started another culture of Thai where mycelium occured pretty fast.

yeah i dont know i think ill keep em a few more days just to see but ill seperate them from the healthy jars.
The mycelium in this jar is really weird instead of being fuzzy or strainy rhizomorphic it looks like patches of mycelium. YUCK
:P

I took a look at the pics.. they didn't look that bad I would have isolated and waited a few days.

hey
well ive got an important question.
its hard to get casing material like peat and coco coir where i live.
all i can get is those jiffy peat pellets and that those coco FIBERS.
atleast vermiculite is no problem to get
well my substrate will be ready soon and maybe you guys can help me decide how to case. do u think i can use those peat peellets instead of peat?

I've never even attempted casings so I might be overstepping my bounds of authority on the subject but I know that horse poo and peat are often used as a casing so to my knowledge... that would probably work.
