A buddy of mine is taking a road trip from the mid east coast down to Florida next summer...she's going to be passing through many states traveling down I-95
How safe if is for her to carry a bit of pot on her, do they drug search at state borders? How much should she take?

If she wants to be super safe, vaccuum seal daily amounts, carry them inside a mason jar, and only have what you need, smell covered, and hidden well.
If she doesn't plan on smoking while driving (best idea), and she's just bringing some down to chill with, then just hide it well airtight, and she'll be fine.
I drove around a town of over 120,000 for close to a year with a piece and up to an eighth at pretty much all times because I had to smoke mostly in my car.

There's no border searches silly!
Just DON'T GET PULLED OVER. That is the key! No expired tabs, no out headlights, tail lights, turn signals, broken windshields, bullshit hanging from the rearview, speeding, etc.
And never consent to a search! If you follow those rules then the only thing you ever have to worry about is getting pulled over by a K9 unit. So #1 don't get pulled over, #2 no searches. The only way you get fucked is the 1 in 1000 chance that you both fuck up AND happen to get pulled over by a cop that has a dog.

Put drugs in the trunk. Do not Consent to a search! If there is no probable cause to search the vehicle, a search can be denied.
She doesn't have to be paranoid if everything is in her trunk. She just needs to say clearly to an officer "I DO NOT CONSENT TO A SEARCH OF MY VEHICLE," and not give in to the mindfuck. They have absolutely no right to search her vehicle if they do not have probable cause. If everything is in the trunk you know they do not have probable cause.
And I've never been in a interstate border crossing situation where the vehicle I am in has to be searched. I'm not sure of the legality of that.
Edited to say: I'm not sure about the canine situation either. I guess if the dog smells something your car is fair game, but my instinct is telling me that may not be legal.

Dog indicating = probable cause. The dog knows what his master wants him to indicate on, so it doesn't matter if they actually smell anything. If nothing is found they claim that he's just smelling a scent of something that was there awhile ago or just blame it on the dog. They can totally fuck your rights and you have no legal recourse whatsoever.
