agreed. I love the stuff from late 60's-early 70's the best, back in the good old days. If we didnt have such kick ass technology I wouldnt feel so bad for not getting to live through the psychedelic era.
-------------------- "There is a world beyond ours, a world that is far away, nearby, and invisible. And there is where God lives, where the dead live, the spirits and the saints, a world where everything has already happened and everything is known. That world talks. It has a language of its own. I report what it says. The sacred mushroom takes me by the hand and brings me to the world where everything is known. It is they, the sacred mushrooms, that speak in a way I can understand." Anyone into jazz? not just 60's early 70's jazz.....lol
If you want some of the craziest music to trip to, I would recommend the new scofeild and medeski martin and wood compilation. Guitar, keys, bass, and drums. By the way medeski(keys) has about 4 brains working at the same time. Living in this new psychedelic 2000's aint so bad.
As far as psychedelic music goes, I dont listen to techno. But these would be at the top of my list as trippiest artists/Bands to check out:
-Herbie hancock(some of the funk years) -Grant green(his majesty king funk)(my favorite album ever) -Miles davis (bitches brew will make you freak out because its so good) -John scofeild (all albums) -weather report (black market) -shakti (all albums) More progressive: kinda nutty recommendations
-Bela-fleck and the F-tones -mahavishnu orchestra -allan holdsworth(best guitarest ever technically)
Stuff you have heard of:
-santana (lotus) -phish (if you dont know them WELL already them you dont know what you set list to trip to would be) -the dead, (american beauty, good lord) -hendrix is always kinda nice -the doors (if you are a big fan of listening to lyrics while tripping, which I personally am not) - radiohead ( if you dont like them you can suck it) - Floyd (pulse live)(and most of their stuff)(I dont know about you but I liked all the shit they did in the 80's)
Well thats a start.

Im a musician not a critic, but I still think J-airplane is a fuggin joke.
I guess they dont hit my ear in the right way. I just think starship inc sucks nuts.
part of me is kidding, but I sort of feel that way personally.
Thats a good list Hyper_Panda_GO.......Some of them are new to me.
Thanks!

Damn I wish I could play music...
Until then I can only settle for lyricism
Jefferson Starship I'm not familiar with at all, but form what I understand their style is quite different from Tha Plane
Anyway, my elitist essential tag isn't so much for the music itself, but rather their significance
Jefferson Airplane, love them or not, was a key player in the psychedelic music scene, and the movement itself
To that extent, I add The Grateful Dead to my list, though they're probably THE most overrated band I've ever listened to

If you like to reminisce about a time you never lived in, or did live in, then you liking the airplane is just fine. Much like the legendary pink dots.
The dead is underrated by people who either have not checked them out thoroughly or they just dont know how complex and emotional music can really be when being both psychedelic and folkey. Hunter was a great lyricist/poet if you are into the whole lyrics thing while tripping.
In my opinion, if you think the dead is over rated you dont know anything about music and certainly dont know much about the psychedelic sceen in those days, or these days for that matter. It really does have to do with what hits your ear. A Love Supreme doesnt really hit everyones ear the same way...........LOL
Jerry will always be a very influential guitarest. Not in any way over rated. There songs that worked so well with his sound were not over rated either.
On the other hand, the airplane were a contrived piece of pop-sound in those days. It only got way worse in the 80's. I could say that they seemed over rated, but that would be a bit much since they are liked by alot of psychedelic folks to this day.
If you cant hear it, thats fine.
The grateful dead never claimed to be anything. They just fuggin jammed.
They cant be over rated because anyone who knows anything about music knows that they were not the most talented band ever.
There songwritting and hunters lyrical magic made them one hell of a thing.
My shitting on the airplane has nothing to do with the grateful dead.
There are very few bands I would say are over rated. Sadly, I wish this conversation could end, but I have to tell the truth, and If any band is over rated I would have to go with the aircrash, and hendrix inc.

Every person save one boasts of the Dead's talent but I'm just not seeing it
The lyrics and sound aren't anything special to me
I actually do agree about JA being overrated, and Jendrix I don't particularly care about

We are on the same page. The dead is over rated aswell. I just like to talk about music in a weird way. I actually just have a habit of shitting on people who say anything is over rated. Its what people like. I dont have to like the j-airplane/starship....... I see what you mean.
I like jazz. Jefferson inc dont provide me with anything near what I want from psychedelic music.
Jerry is indeed groundbreaking for a great many people. It helps to be a life long musician to realize this. The man was for the most part self taught. He had a shitty but emotional voice and a guitar solo capability that is unmatched to this day. People can reproduce that sound easily on the guitar. They are basically playing "jerry improv" though. He was a fuggin acid head. He was new, and strangely he still is new and speaks to people more through his guitar than he ever did when singing.
I am the biggest fan of the guitar heroes. Jimi hendrix is DEFINATELY not one of them, for me, personally.
Id pick a non-cracked out trey anastasio over jimi any day. Not only because he is far more capable of reproducing any style.
I just like treys style amidst a groove far more than anything hendrix has done.
Its the new new.....

Being overrated is quite a subjective thing
It depends on whoever you talk to
Jimi Hendrix for me is enjoyable at best, but nothing memorable. Again, I respect him far more due to his icon status rather than actual talent

I like to listen to many different types of music while tripping, I quess at first should be mentioned electronic performers, like Autechre, Infected Mushroom, Squarepusher, Air, Meat Beat Manifesto... ... I also like to listen to rock music. For example: Ween, Steppenwolf, The Grateful Dead, White Stripes, Aphrodites Child... ... and can't forget fast and highly technical metal like Lamb Of God, Necrophagist... and also many pieces of drum and bass with evoliving soundscapes, rouhg drums, and deep basses.
