Tree Planters?

Most of the treeplanters i've met have been pretty cool, my type of people....

Anyways, my roommate went planting once and had a great time and made good money, He knows the foreman of a crew for a company called Apex...

So, im expecting lots of bugs, a real hard time, and alot of bugs.

Not gonna set my expectations too high, but the guy im going with knows a foreman who is putting us on a team up north BC i believe.
I look forward to riding the employment insurance afterwards..

Seems like all types go tree planting - my city has lots of tree planters passing thru in the summer, and most are really really cool. Some are macho assholes just out to make a buck.

So, anyone experienced? tall tales? resources at all?

i look forward to all you can eat, 10hr days, and wildlife (aka. grizzly bears + cougars.) Its gonna be tough...

EDIT: i figured there would be some expereienced fellows around here. No?

like an actual arborist? or one of those people who follows logging crews and plants shitloads of sapplings to replace what they took?

sounds easy enough.. i know someone whos an arborist, he gets paid mad money to climb trees and cut off limbs... never met a tree planter though. not much logging going on in the west side of chicago i guess :smirk:

My dad was a tree planter for one summer in the 70s in the Gifford Pinchot N.F. in SW Washington and said the job itself was terrible but the people were interesting (lots of guys fresh out of Vietnam) and it was nice to be in the forest a lot. He said it was a good learning experience, but would never return to do it again due to the fact that he wasn't paid for all the work he did and it was very grueling.

Tree planting is far from "easy" work.
Climbers get paid really good money if they know what they're doing. You take a few cert courses and get a bit of experience and you'll be making $20 an hour within a few years easily. Good climbers are hard to find. I was going to do that when I was studying horticulture but couldn't scrape together enough for the summer climbing course.

Know that you'll be spending 3.5 months doing nothing other than planting and spending time at your basecamp - with the occasional occasion to wash your cloaths, whether that's at an actual laundramat or in the river.

There aren't a lot of chicks to go around either, and if they're there they probably are with a BF or will find their own fuck buddy pretty quick. Or they're celebate.

Dunno the drug situation, that depends on the company you work for. Some will have them, some won't. You might make some good extra money if you bring your own stash and sell tho - depending on your camp. There's not much competition out in the middle of nowhere, so inflation's all up to you.

They chop down trees all over the place here in WV... Right behind my house they left the treeline but right behind it the forest is completely gone... Anyhow... out of dozens of logging operations I've seen in my life, I have not once seen, much less met a tree planter. All the places I've seen cut down always remain empty shitholes until bushes/baby trees start to grow back in naturally. Makes me wonder if they plant the trees elsewhere or if there's somebody at the top getting kickbacks for not enforcing the replanting law...

Before a logging company's allowed to cut any trees they have to have a plan for the regrowth of the area. Sometimes they let the area re-forrest itself, but it depends on the area's conditions.
