If you are planning on inoculating that jar of cardboard, realize that once colonized the mycelium is going to hold all pieces together tenaciously. This means that "convenient removal" will involve tearing the pieces apart from each other. Using a method along the lines of the above link seems to be more than sufficient in propagating mycelium via cardboard.

I've made jars full of torn up cardboard as spawn before and it did work, but for actually using that mass as little agar wedges, it doesn't seem worthwhile. I didn't sterilize them either, just pouring hot water over the cardboard and briefly letting it sit in this before draining is sufficient. Of course you want to start with relatively clean cardboard, if its got signs of mold then don't bother.

thats an interesting idea! so you'd dip the cardboard wedges into a nutrient solution, essential soak it in sugar water, strain it out, then put it into a glass petri and autoclave it, next inoc it with whatever you want, a tiny piece of another one from before or something, and it grows out onto the next 9 or something, then you have 9 pieces.. hmm.. which you can inoc grain with because they are sterile.. neat! no agar! try it

Without nutes of any kind added on my part, I'm having great luck getting cyan mycelium to jump, from a few woods chips that are years old, and had tiny little white 'strings' hanging from them a week ago, to cardboard.

Some outside , some inside, some in a jar clean jar with the filter, just made from saran wrap, and polyfil, this jar is sitting in the incubator and growing strong without any sign of contams.
