I am looking to obtain spores of this strain of muschrrom. I have been all over the place, only to find that the mushrooms being sold are processed. Where can I find strains or growing info. Please give me info. I understand that these mushrooms are anti-cancer, and cannot afford the outrageous prices that sellers are giving to obtain a processed mushrrom. PLEASE help me in this quest. And, it's nice to be back.

I sent out a bunch of blazei cultures a few weeks ago to people here and there. I was in the process of moving and so didn't keep any for myself. My kit is starting to fruit [FP's 'almond portabella'], I'm very excited!
If everything continues to develop normally, I'll get a print off of one fruit. I want to eat the others while they're fresh and young :)
There are cultures of this guy floating around out there, though.

Hello. I have spore prints from PF's almond portabello kit. Growing from spores isn't as easy as growing mushrooms from a kit. You have to isolate your own strain-you can't just grow a bunch of PF style cakes and case. You need a lot of substrate(at least ten lbs) to get anything significant with almond mushrooms. I collect these from the wild year round.
One does not need 10 lb of substrate to grow this mushroom.
They will fruit in small containers.
The strains are incredibly variable in brusing reactions and growth rates.
Heres an example of caps notice the disk
The spores germinate easily. Strains may vary.

So you are able to collect these year round? Have you grown these out? Please share some info on substrates, temps, anything you would. I've had some real problems getting the cultures I've had to fruit using manure-based substrates...So I'm really anxious to learn what I can. Thanks so much!

They may fruit off uncased grain. Although this is not predicatabe and maybe airborne symbionts are needed. Notice this mushroom fuited out of the side of rye grain medium. The glass quart jar was smashed and placed into another larger circumerance plastic container in order to allow room for developement. If the mycelium looks like the photo I think one will suceed using a wide variety of substrates. The mycelium will also exhibts the golden color droplets excreeted by many strains of oyster mushroom. The photo with the mycelium breaking the surface shows mycelium growth after the plastic container was filled with a trademark soil that is often used as a casing. Paramerter have not been tested yet due to lack of time and space. Substrate is a more intresting thing to test because it is easier to and cheaper parameter to control then the weather. Stamets has the parameters listed in his book. There is huge variety in strains so the Deviation from these parameter may be large.

There is a patent published under the name A. blazei. This is subrufecens named first, but they are the same, or if different close enogh to breed. Mating types are compatable and can form fertile dycaryotic mycelium. Based on croses from strain gown or collected in Brazil, Japan, CA and HI. Test were performed by stain specialist and puplished in Mycologia by R. Kerrigan.

A patent for what?
I used a compost mixture of horse manure, wheat straw, urea and gypsum. The mixture also calls for brewer's grain, corn cobbs and a minimal amount of poultry manure. But I chose not to use all of these ingredients. My mixture was; 5 parts horse manure, 1 part wheat straw and a dusting of the top of the pile with urea and gypsum. A bit heavier with the gypsum. Mixed thoroughly while watering lightly. The mixture seemed to work well, but if you want to be dead on with a compost mixture for Agaricus species, check out Penn St.'s page here. Spawn run was somewhat basic as far times are concerned. A non-sterile peat based casing layer added after the spawn run and once again incubated for a few days to allow casing colonization. Patched accordingly to obtain an even casing colonization and then watered as usual. Fruited in tubs with a cool-mist used for FAE. Temperatures hovered around 66-68 degrees. Nothing major really. I too didn't have great yield with the blazei, but there's definately a lot of potential there if done in optimal conditions with a good performing isolate. Good luck none the less.

The patent is for the deatailed information needed to cultivatie the mushrooom on sterilized grains and nutrient supplemented grain substrates.
By the way hotnuts to you have any photos of your fruitings? Did you mix the spawn throught the substrate or did you sandwich it? Did you use trays, bags, jar? Did you isolate the stain from the wild? Detailed cultivation of this mushroom is lacking and the patent is by far the most detailed Ive seen published. There seems to be a lot of competition and secrecty with this one. I know the appeal of it is not like cubensis for most members here, but if the community members who have grown it could make several good detailed grow logs well the a coop shroomery patent. Anyways I have FREE wild crafted A. blazei spore sprints for any member who can contribute to the expansion on cultivation methods based on their own perosnoal experiences preferably with photos. This can only help the art, and I think this section of the site. One rarly sees any member growing any type of Agaricus in trays. They taste great especially the almond races.

I bought a multispore culture from Penn St. No isolates yet. Soon as the compost is finished i'll be starting. I did sandwich the wbs grain spawn in between 2 layers of compost in a rubbermaid bin. Mixing the grain with the compost will work as well. 4 quarts of spawn to approximately 12-14 quarts of compost. Spawn run temperatures were the same as the fruiting temperatures, 66-68. Penn St. sent along some parameters with the culture and they recommended 60-66 degrees for fruiting and 72 degrees for spawn and casing run. 66-68 worked for me, but i'll be using their advice for the next grow.
I did post a picture at Mycotopia of the grow and the way I did it with the whole rig. It really was a silly looking rig, but worked ok I guess. We've been doing some upgrading with the sight and I think my photo may have been lost. If not, I surely can't find it. I really don't care to be honest with you. It wasn't anything i'd archive or anything. lol. You could see some of the large fruitbodies under the plastic with holes I had attached on top of the bins. The fruiting was poor, but the mushrooms are meaty and large for the most part. I'll post a complete log of the whole process, as i've already started the photography of the compost making process.

its great to hear that people are playing with this species... i have been interested for awhile but have never had the time. i recently received a culture from a friend who went to japan and brought back a ton of genetics. i have spawn growing now and appreciate all the test runs people have been doing
