My morning glory seedlings are kamakasi-ing...
    #639324 - 05/21/02 03:45 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

so i planted 30 morning glorys i think 2 weeks ago. i had soaked the seeds overnight, and in about 4 or 5 days many had sprouted. I had 16 total seedlings, when over the weekend, some of them decided to cripple, crease at the stem, fall over and die. a total of 6 seedlings have plunged to their deaths. Is this normal? i've never been good at growing anything and i'm hoping that these will not fail too.
by the way, this happened after i placed them outside for a few hours to catch some sun...

Yes, suicide is a trait genetically built into the lifespan of many flowering plants...

Just kidding, it was probably either over-watering or underwatering. Did you ever read about how to grow these? Different plants call for different nutes. Maybe you were in the wrong there. Then again the culprit could be desease, pH, temperature...

It's hard to tell with out pictures, and then only slightly easier.

yeah i'll go take some pictures in a few minutes.

they were planted in a seed starter kit thingy. i used soil-less potting mix which is mostly coco coir, with some fertalizers. i don't know what the pH is, and the temperature is around 67-70 F.

i was under the impression that ipomoea was a very easy to grow plant, maybe i just suck.
hm...i just noticed there is a weblike material on the surface of one of the squares that never sprouted. could it be mold? or a bug?

got me some pics. i was going to take a few more but the batteries ran out:

off to the left we have 2 healthy sprouts, in the middle some not so healthy sprouts and bottom right we have 2 dive bombers, plunging to their deaths.

here we have a healthy sprout in front of a fallen sprout

three fallen sprouts with a healthy one off to the right

leave them in a place with indirect light and watch out not to overwater it! they're too young to endure a lot of sun... actually if i was in your place i'd transfer the bigger ones to pots already to give it's roots more space...
