Terrarium questions

Well my 10 jars are fully colonized and two are already starting to pin, so I figure I need to get them in a fruiting container ASAP. I haven't given much thought as to what type I want. I was leaning towards a simple rubbermaid container with perlite on the bottom. I have plenty of free time and don't mind spraying for humidity. A friend who started about a week earlier than I, has this setup and his cakes are already fruiting. I was at his place today. However, I noticed how messy the perlite looked and smelled and was thinking of dropping it completely. Will the cakes get adequate moisture just from daily misting ? Without perlite ? I though of just buying the rubbermaid container and putting the cakes on top of chicken wire with a drip shield ala pf tek. Is the perlite merely a matter of convenience ? Just retains the moisture to allow less frequent mistings ? Also, any tips on cheap humidity meters ? Do they make them for less than 20 dollars ? Where can I buy one ? Thanks for your advice.

You're definetly going to want to have some perlite in there. Misting wont keep your humidity up for long. Cakes need high humidity, and the best way to achieve this is with perlite. Its not really that much of a pain. The best method is just getting a strainer/collander and rinsing it down with water, and adding. Dont do a layer of perlite then a layer of water, as that is just too wet.

No, it keeps your humidity high. You need this for cakes.

Check your local humidor (cigar shop). They sell analog ones for about 12 bucks. Radioshack carries senisitve digital ones for 25$
