buy a set of direct drive decks, a decent two channel mixer with a 3 band eq, some midrange needles (stanton makes some good ones for cheap), and a pair of decent headphones. Records can be had at a number of online shops, i reccomend dancerecords.com satelliterecords.com or planetxusa.com

btw, gemini makes some decent equipment for a good price. Their xl-1000 series are usually a decent place to start and their umx-90 mixer is pretty bad ass for the price.

If you think this is something you're going to be serious about, I recommend spending the money on Technic 1200's. They're an excellent investment.

Shop around in your price range. Figure out what you can afford and list them all with what you like about them and what you don't (even if you don't know much about the equipment itself). Check reviews for them and compare. Check ebay for some good package deals. Some dealers put together their own packages for a decent price with some good equipment. I got a package like that with 2 Gemini TT02's and a nice 3 channel Gemini mixer with EQ's. You definitely don't want a mixer without 3-band EQ like Coda said.

unless you really plan on just being a turntablist and not mixing records like a club dj, that'd be ok to start out with.
Straight arm decks SUCK for mixing records tho, you want a tone arm in the s style, less wear on your records and styli.
I agree with burke on the 1200 comment, i normally don't reccomend newbs to start out with it because its a HEFTY investment. they sell for 450-500 brand new, and used techs dont come much cheaper, so if you've got that kind of dough id go for it.
Another reason i reccomend shitty equipment is because it teaches you to be a more capable dj. Not every club/party environment has the best equipment, so if you learn to play on crap you can play almost anywhere. Back when i started dancing a lot of the crews could only afford belt drive tables, i can't tell you how many times ive witnessed a belt snap in the middle of the mix causing the music to stop while they fixed it. Not only that but the torque on BD tables SUCK, so if you can mix on one of them, you can mix on fucking anything

I really don't see how you can compare digital DJ'ing with a computer to using real vinyl and turntables.

as for a mixer you can be cheap in the beginning bheringer djx-700 ($175) a clone of the poineer djm-600 ($1000)

House is probably the easiest genre to start out with. Or maybe trance. I learned by spinning house and then moved onto breakbeats/electro and now I spin dubstep/grime mostly. Still some electro & dnb.
