Casing With Just Vermiculite

How effective is a solely vermiculite casing as far as yield and warding off infection?
My casing procedure:
1. Microwave moist vermiculite for 5 minutes 2. Add 1 inch of sterile vermiculite to bottom of opaque container. 3. Crumble a layer of mycelium over vermiculite. 4. Add 1/2 inch of vermiculite to cover mycelium.
Thoughts?

Sounds good. Just remember to put tin foil or something on the sides of the container so you don't get side pinning. Black trash bags also work fine. Anything to keep the light out

I got my first bag of MGMC because you always talk about it so much... I guess I'll see how it works in a few days!

Vermiculite by itself is the poorest choice of a casing material. It's barely better than no casing at all. In addition, you don't put a layer under the substrate. The casing only goes above. If you put dry verm below your substrate, it will draw the moisture out that you'd rather have go towards forming mushrooms.
If you wish a single ingredient casing, peat moss is superior to plain verm. A mix of the two with lime added to balance Ph is best. Many commercial potting mixes are a combination of peat, verm, and lime. For even better results, add ten percent gypsum by volume to the casing material. RR

Im sure you will like it,it sure beats mixing up a bunch of stuff yourself,I also pasturize mine,so you may want to try that,I have seen it being used right out of the bag but I figure why not be on the safe side

I would suggest using peatmoss/vermiculite and adding some lyme powder or calcium carbonate or whatev but alot of people say using soley miracle grow moisture control is better or the same. there is actually a thread around here somewhere arguing about the two with a poll, you should try looking for it for more info on the subject.

Now if I start using a 50/50 casing mix of peat moss and vermiculite can I still sterilize the mixture in a microwave? How important is casing sterilizing?

"How important is casing sterilizing?"
Please spend a few weeks with the search engine and you'll learn far more than just asking each time. Casing material should be pasteurized at 140F to 160F for an hour. Don't sterilize casing. RR
