I just found these, growing out of old horse manure. They are the only mushrooms growing right now, and only on 3 particular spots that only have horse manure. There are many more of them still just poppin' up, so if these are actives, then its gonna be a great day!
Gulf Coast region Temps 65 - 70 100% Humidity
Spore print is dark purple/blue
Am I going on a trip today?

Come on someone.. 275 views and no replies? Can someone please shed some light on my find.
I am noticing no visible bruising, by the way, which I guess is not a good sign.

i think that by the color of the spore print they don't seem active.. most common colors would be black, brown, purple brown...
but they look like copelandia to me... (i'm not too experienced so..means almost nothing..)
just to shed some light ;D

I agree with the ID, certainly appears to be P. papilionaceus, previously P. sphinctrinus. Spore print should be black.

cure, are you certain that papilionaceus is the official taxon for this species? when i was a kid, they were calling it 5-6 different things around the marble pit, but we all aggreed P. Sphinctrinus was the official name.

Very good question... and now I'm unsure. I checked the index fungorum, and it lists Panaeolus papilionaceus and Panaeolus sphinctinus as seperate species- however, MykoWeb lists them as synonymous!

yeah, you know what? i don't know either. Nobody really does. several big names fucked up along the way and it got itself scattered. you could ask all the authorities, Gartz would probably tell you one thing and stamets would tell you another. theres just no credibility in the taxon of this mushroom.
i think at least here at the shroomery we ought to be resolute about it. If the big dudes can't publish the same name in more than 3 consecutive papers.. maybe it will fall on the public to just give it a common nomenclature in the practice of identification.
lets start by never saying "some sources claim it has some hallucinogenic properties" because we all KNOW thats bogus. there is NO credible claim to that effect. just an assumption people make about genera sharing all chemical properties. doi!1

I know this word for one funny reason. Phthirus pubis, aka - crabs or pubic lice, are little mites that infect humans only. The French name for them is 'Papillon d'Amour' or, buttefly of love. They look nothing like butterflies though. How do I know this you ask? Well, even though these only infect humans, veterinarians all know what they look like. The reason is, many vets get someone coming into their clinic at some point with a bunch of little lice in a glass or a vial. They'll say something along the lines of, 'hey, my dog's been itchy and I found these crawling on him, could you give me some shampoo or something?' So boys and girls, if you get the crabs, don't think you're going to avoid some embarssment by going this route.

Do a google search for butterfly of love - nothing comes up crabs-related. But, lots of songs, poems and other crap talking about 'butterflies of love' that are a whole lot funnier knowing what that means in part of the world. I had to type 'butterfly of love pubis' to get a site to pop up with crabs and the French words for it.

BTW: papillon also = nipple. papiloma is a wart, so named for it's nipple like [or noblike] shape.
