What can you do with a firearm?
    #6385791 - 12/19/06 09:29 AM (17 years, 3 months ago)

What can you actually do with a firearm?  :sniper:

Right off the bat, please do not clutter this thread with suggestions like "throw it in the river" or other funny or anti-gun agenda you might have, let's keep this thread ontopic.

I'm wondering what shroomerites and people in general can do with them, as to hitting a target across distance. If you leave it to hollywood somebody can throw a deck of cards in the air and punch all the aces, and in computergames every nerd can save the world. I'm wondering what real people can do with firearms in the real world.

In how much time can you get how many out of ten bullets into how big a target across how much distance. That kind of information.

But it has to be real. No guesswork, what you state must be based on your real life experiences with either actual firearms or close approximates such as airguns and crossbows.
Keep it real.

Again: please do not use this thread as a political platform for pro or anti gun activism, and let's keep self defense out of it too.

You, a firearm and a target. If you actually have experience tell us what you can do.

It's all in the practice, and it's NOTHING like Hollywood.

With a scoped Remington 700 and match ammo, I can put 10 rounds in a 3" circle from 100 yards... That's shit compared to my friends who actually shoot in compititions. And that's aiming off of a sandbag, not just standing there holding the weapon.

Handguns are much harder... From ~30 feet (the most I ever shoot with a pistol), I can keep most rounds on a paper plate, but it's WAY harder than it seems. That's with a .45 Sig Sauer... And that's aiming with serious intent, not hip shooting or doing any bullshit one handed Hollywood shots. When you start cracking off rounds like on TV, you don't hit shit.

My friend who shoots competitions in incredible. He can shoot 100 yards with open sights (no scope) and put all 10 rounds from an AR-15 on target, with maybe one or two outside the 8 ring... And he is only considered "good"... Professionals rarely miss the 9 ring from that range!

Are you a shooter, or just getting interested?

I did a lot of airgun shooting when I was younger and it became less interesting to me when I could hit a one-inch target four out of five times across 20 meters (60ft) with my air rifle. With my air pistol I could hit a potato at 3mtr/10ft most of the time with a bit of aiming, and a dartboard-sized target 4/5 times at 10mtr/33ft without any aiming to speak of.

I have no idea how that translates to actual firearms though.

If there was a way in which I could shoot in my backyard without the noise and the danger, I perhaps might pick it up again. I don't want to startle my neighbors or send ricochets zipping through their garden, I don't want dangerous projectile velocities, explosions or handle heavy metals. And an airgun would be too loud and problematic too. I think the only answer to this that still would be fun would be an Airsoft, but I think Dutch law might object unless it's bright green and orange.

Probably none... Aiming is the art of not flinching at the last second... That takes some getting used to when the gun makes a loud BOOM and kicks back at you.

Before the noise reaches your ears and the recoil hits you, the bullet must've left the barrel al ready, no? Muzzle velocity pwns speed of sound.

AIM surplus still has a bunch of 308 Ishapore enfields in stock, you should check them out if you like the Enfield action. I'm thinking about getting one and refinishing it, then buying a whole bunch of South African milsurp 308 to run through it.

What he means is inexperienced people tend to anticipate the sound and recoil. They lose focus on keeping the sights on the target by tensing their muscles in preparation of the BOOM! Sometimes people pull on the trigger instead of squeezing it causing the gun to jerk right before firing.

I always say, let the gun scare you and you will most likely stay true to your target.

I clay shoot, not alot, but am getting into it more (alot more if I get a 12 gauge for christmas.

But as of right now, I can hit 15-18 out of 25 clays. Not so good compared to proffesionals, but for me it is. My experiance is based soley around up my cabin, drinkin some beers and not being to serious about hitting clays.

Yes, it's the anticipation that fucks you out of a perfectly good shot. My nephew was horrible with a 9mm, until I showed him how puny the recoil actually is... Once he realized it wasn't that bad, and to just let it "suprise" him, his accuracy went WAY up.

Thanks for the clarification JustK!

The first time I went shooting, I went with a friend who had just gotten a .45 S&W semi-automatic. The recoil was insane, and I always tried to prepare myself for it by pushing the barrel down at the last second.

It's kind of funny how I found out i was compensating for the recoil (and throwing my aim way off). I would just be sitting, aiming down the sights, popping off shots. I would get to the end of the clip, and the slide would stay back, but I wouldn't know since I was looking directly down the barrel. I would go to pull the trigger, and I would pull it, and lean the gun way forward, and then laugh at myself.

I'm having a hard time explaining it and putting it into words, but if you've shot a handgun before, you probably know what I'm talking about.

All of the above is complete and total fiction, and is just my pathetic attempt to fit in.

I use to go to the range every Saturday morning, but after
a few years of breathing gun power, and wasting money,
I never renewed my membership there again.
Now they just sit, I take them out sometimes, dismantle,
and clean and lube, change the ammo, sometimes.
Also for a auto, they say to take the bullets out of the mags,
and let the springs have a rest.

I've done a lot of Skeet Shooting with my father at his local gun club. Back in high school when I was shooting regularly, I could average 17-21 (of 25) on a regulation skeet field. I pretty much stopped when I left for college, and regret not joining the shooting club at my university. I could have improved a lot. My dad still shoots in many tournements his state around the country.

Yeah the cost of ammo is what stopped me from going every week.Shooting at paper also gets old. I go now maybe once a month it isnt enough to get at the level i was before but fine for self defense.
